3 legged Greyhound?
Permalink Closed

Just wondered if anyone could help with this. It was posted by a Greyhound owner on the doggysnaps forum today (the dog is 10):

"A fornight ago Kit had an operation on her front right leg to remove a tumour. Unfortunately not all of the tumour could be removed and it is now growing at a greater rate resulting in the lost of blood flow to her foot.

Yesterday after another visit to the vet to change her bandage he advised us to remove the leg. Previously he did not think this was an option but he has researched this and had found she could carry on as normal on three legs. I am afraid because of her being so tall it could affect her balance and maybe limit what she can do, e.g. getting up/down stairs, jumping in and out of the truck or even standing to eat.

I would appreciate any help or advice anyone could give me on this matter as Kit has another appointment Monday and I believe that a decision may have to be made.

Thanks"

I can fully understand you must be shattered and worried sick about the prognosis for your dog. But I really believe most dogs do amazingly well on 3 legs. I have seen many dogs outside and on telly with 3 legs and they do extremely well.  I honestly don't think it would be any more of a problem with a greyhound having taller legs.  Obviously they are disadvantaged, but they soon adapt very quickly and you just have to work round it.  Greyhounds being very lazy will soon become accustomed to 3 legs,  They do not necessarily need their short bursts of running.
I  have even seen paralysed dogs with two wheels strapped on at the back and boy you should see them go!!!   Dogs are different to humans, in the sense that they just get on with the handicap and don't get depressed.

I used to own a cattery for ten years and had many boarders that were 3 legged. The only problem ever identified was, if the cat had a front leg missing, they could not dig a hole to cover and bury their "business"    It is much easier if it is a back leg missing for a cat.     Well, it does not apply to dogs!  so, they don't really bother.
Dogs can pee in any old way too, if a back leg is missing or not, they learn to adapt.          My boy pees like a girl anyway!!!  He won't stand on one leg at the back!!
I was watching Caeser Milan and the dog whisperer last night, he was working with a 3 legged lab and this dog was just the happiest boy ever. Not a problem, the dog was as bouncy as anything! very happy wee soul
I really think everything can be overcome, and I would never hesitate if it was going to save my pet.
Good luck, thinking about you, Marian x

Last year at the Christmas dog show the dog who won Dog the judge would most like to take home was a 3 legged lurcher girl. She was not small and moved as if she had all of her legs I only noticed the missing leg when I came to take the photos. She was happy and content as you can see by the photo.

theres a three legged lurcher that comes into our kennels regularly, he's 14 years old at the moment and he had his leg removed many moons ago, theres no reason the dog cant live a happy life with a missing leg. just dont lift up the back leg on the same side or he'll topple over :P

Hi Santas Little Helper,
Sorry I didn't see this sooner.  I hope Kit's owner got on well at the vet's today.

My girl Tyler had a leg amputated at the age of 9.  I can empathise that it is not an easy decision to make and due to the type of illness, unfortunately there is limited time to reach a decision.  I thought as my girl had such a determined nature she would be able to cope, and she did.  She was very tall for a female, and although it was a hind leg, she often ventured on long walks, and ambled about happily like nothing was amiss.  Balance was not a problem either.

It is heartening to see the lovely lurcher in the pic here.  There are a few GAL hounds very much on the go with 3 legs!!

I wish Kit and her owner all the best and hope everything turns out well.

Fingers crossed that Kit's operation went well yesterday and that it won't be long before he recovers.

Just to let you all know that things for Kit and her owners are really looking positive. Here's a few of her latest post:

"Well what a day but I am so happy to have Kit home. When I picked her up from the vet's he did warn me that the wound was not pleasant, I braced myself but when I saw it I felt sick and started to cry I think it was stock of what we had done. David carried her to the truck but when we stopped outside the house before we could get out Kit was up on her feet I could not believe it, so then I cried somemore with happiness. The vet told us that she would moan and be a bit uncomfy tonight but hopefully by morning she should be on her feet walking with support (guest who's on the sofa tonight). She has already eaten some chicken and I am over the moon how well she is doing. I know its early days but it has given me the hope I needed. I will let you know how she is getting on day by day, Kit has another appointment with the vet Friday for a post op check. Thanks again for everyone's support, and I would like to say thank you to Kit for being the best dog in the world "

"The visit to the vet was a great success today. Kit walked in on her own and surprised everyone and was even given a doggy treat. There is still quite a bit of fluid around the wound but the swelling is coming down. Our next appointment is on the 25th and hopefully the stitches can be removed.
I am hoping to take a few photos over the weekend to show everyone how well Kit is and I will keep you posted on her progress. Thank you all again for your support, it really does help"

Brave Kit and brave you wink I hope the recovery is fast and the photos are on the forum soon. I wonder how many GAL dogs have less than four legs, Kit must be one of the few.
