I had the worst night of my life I think last night. Ziggy and Vernon were running out of the living room when Ziggy slipped and I heard the most awful scream, then Ziggy was holding his back right leg up with half of it just dangling. It was obviously broken.
We had to get the pet ambulance as Steven's car is off the road and I went with Ziggy to the emergency vet in town.
I have never been so shook up or cried so much and it made me realise just how much they really mean to me.
He was kept in overnight and they x rayed him and gave him pain relief. This morning they said he had a comfortable night and was wearing a large bandage to keep him comfortable. He will stay there until tomorrow when he'll go to my own vet. The vet said he believes it to be an uncomplicated break but he may need surgery. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.
It was awful going out for our walk with just the one dog today.
Poor Ziggy and poor you - what an awful experience for both of you. I will keep my fingers crossed that he doesn't need surgery and his break will heal well and quickly.
Just goes to show how easily these things are done. Will have a word with Tom and Dave now because they race around the house without a care in the world.
Poor Ziggy It must have been awful for you too. When you see them charging around it can be quite scary at the best of times, my heart is always in my mouth in case one of them gets hurt.
Hope it proves to be uncomplicated and he is back home with you all soon
Poor Ziggy, it must have been awful for you. Mason and I will have our paws and fingers crossed there are no comlications and Ziggy is home soon. Marie
Poor Ziggy. Gambol ripped his dew claw again last week having a maddy with Keera and I thought that was bad. I hope all goes well at your vets today and fingers crossed no op will be needed. Keep us posted.
Lots of licky kisses from Gambol Keera and Jamie
And good luck from us humans too!!

He is going to the vet school today as they need to put a plate in his leg to mend the break. He hadn't been drinking enough fluids over the weekend so he has been getting IV fluids today. They will probably let him settle in today and do the operation tomorrow.
Fingers crossed everything goes well he could be home in a couple of days.
Vernon seems to be coping fine with the one to one attention and loves his choice of 2 beds.
I've still not had a proper nights sleep and don't think I will until Ziggy is home.
Ziggy hasn't been operated on today as the surgeon is very concerned about his heart and general health.
She called last night to say his heart was very erratic and he hasn't been responding normally to the treatment so far. She wasn't happy about giving him the general anaesthetic for the surgery if he continued to show no improvement.
Today they did chest xrays and ultrasound on his heart which was clear other than normal changes for his age. There is still no explanation for his strange heart rhythm. He was given a light anaesthetic and biopsies were taken from the bone in his leg. She said even a 10 year old dog shouldn't normally break a bone under the circumstances and that his bones are very thin and not normal.
The oncologist will call tonight and let me know the results which they said could be bone cancer. After we get the results then more decisions can be made about treatment.
I'll keep you updated on his progress. Its so good to know you are all thinking of him and to have somewhere to share my stress.
I cannot believe what has happened. This is the first I have been able to get on the forum for a week as I've been having PC problems. I'm so sorry to hear about Ziggy. Please let us know how he gets on.
Just spoke to the surgeon again. Ziggy's first biopsy has come back clear which is excellent news. The second one will take a couple of days so we can't rule anything out just yet but its more positive than before.
She said his heart is still a mystery although she has seen it in greyhounds before and feels it is a greyhound thing.
He will be kept comfortable tonight and tomorrow and she plans to do the surgery on Thursday now. If when she is repairing the break she finds something then she will amputate the leg. If this has to happen he should cope fine.
I'm on a roller coaster of emotion just now. The vet school have been great and are always updating me on his condition throughout the day.
