This is absolutely horrendous, who could believe that something like this could happen all due to someones error. I dread to think how that poor dog felt. Someone needs their butt kicked for this, hard!!!! Nora

Just heard it on the news, words cant express how angry I am at hearing the poor soul was left and forgotten about, they should bloody well charge the person responsible for this!!!!!!!!!! Its disgraceful!!!!!!
Such sad news. Hard to believe that this sort of thing could happen in a police station.
Rest in peace now brindle greyhound ...I do hope that you weren't like so many of your kind..... in that people will care more about you after your death than anyone cared about you when you were alive. I hope that at one time people were kind to you.

This is unbelievable....I know it could have been any breed of dog that was killed by their negligence but for me it just makes it so much worse that it is just another story to add to the long long list of Greyhound abuse
Someone or some lack of responsible procedure has caused a defenceless creature to suffer and die in agony.I'm sure there will be a lot of buck passing in trying to get to the bottom of this. It cannot be allowed to happen again. once was one time too much!!
*LANGBANK KENNELS ON BBC NEWS - TONIGHT (23 Jan.) BETWEEN 6PM AND 7PM*The BBC have been at Rachel's today and this will be aired tonight on the BBC News.
Heartbreaking, totally heartbreaking! I have been tearful every time I think about this. I too hope that someone was kind to the poor soul at some time in it's tragic life.
I hope that nothing like this EVER happens again. I hope that there is some consequence to this sorry state of affairs to those who forgot.
We can really only echo what everyone else has previously put. It is totally horrific and it is terrible to think how much the dog must have suffered.
Surely the Police - of all people - must have documented procedures covering every eventuality. Let's face it, it's not as if this is likely to have been the first dog to have gone into that station. There is simply no excuse.
Lets hope some good comes of this horrible event, and that the dog in question - which we hope is living a life of eternal happiness and comfort - did not die in vain.
Just caught the news. How disgusting, I can as others have said only agree with all the other posts.
I wonder what would have happened if it had been a person who was forgotten about and left to die a slow death from lack of water and food! It just makes me cry.
That black and white greyhound in the blue jacket was lovely - what a great advert! Lets hope it makes just a few kind people think about greyhounds as pets.
Hi Folks, as you can imagine it's been a busy day for GAL dealing with numerous press enquiries, dissapointed that the BBC didn't show the film taken at our kennels today but to be honest I'm kinda uncomfortable with this, it's great that Greyhounds are in the news but very very sad that an incident like this is needed to bring these dogs into the limelight again.
As I said we've had a huge amount of press interest today so I think tomorrow's papers will be full of more stories but that's really dependant on how much the press think they can make of the story. We'll try to post any more articles that we find.
Not sure what happens now in terms of action against the police force involved in this but below are a few details that might interest the email and letter writers amongst you -
I just saw this terrible story on the news, I can't believe that such a thing would happen, in a place that should have been caring and safe. Im brought to tears to think about the poor wee thing being fogrotten about. Words can't describe how angry I a feel.
apparently I missed the GAL footage, we made the national news just before 18:30, I only turned on just after 18:30 to see the scottish news, didn't think we'd make National telly!...
I can't stop crying as I read this. That dog would have suffered and I can only hope those responsible feel the weight of this on their shoulders. Let's hope the dog is enjoying greyhound heaven and that some good (in the form of a change of procedure and in awareness of the plight of greyhounds) will come from such a tragic event.
Yes, let's hope that something positive comes from the appallingly sad end to one of these beautiful, gentle, long-suffering dogs. Once again, the greyhound is the victim of man's inhumanity to its creatures.
I was pleased to see, however, the BBC gave quite good coverage this evening at a time when many people would be watching. Should be similar in tomorrow's newspapers hopefully.
The member of staff responsible for this outrage should be brought to account as soon as possible - and the Police need to ensure that this NEVER, EVER happens again.
Very sad news today. I often drive home listening to the terrible news items of the day but never have I burst into tears as I did today upon hearing the disgusting news.
Unfortunatly this was an incident wating to happen. More than 10 years ago i worked as a volunteer for the SSPCA and found out first hand that the police did not always notify us of a dog in their possession. Someone from the SSPCA would phone (only on week days) to find out if there were any dogs to collect. i know of at least half a dozen occassions when a dog was at the station only for the desk officer to state that there were no dogs there!!!
This continues today! Most police stations that still accept stray dogs are not even equiped with a dish to offer the animal water. And even if they do have a dish then it is only up to a good kind hearted officers own judgement wether or not to feed and water the dog. I'm sorry to rant but it angers me so much that I should vent my anger hear as my dogs cant take anymore hugs!
I can only hope that those responsible are properly dealt with and that this is not treated as the unfortunate "accident" that it so far seems to be treated as. Leasons have to be learned.
So go now to the rainbow bridge dear brindle greyhound. no more pain or sorrow for you only joy
& look for stray dog left to die. Don't know how long it will be on the site for. However I have emailed it to myself so if you want I can forward on the full link again not sure how long that will be available either.
It was heartbreaking to come home & hear the news tonight.
e mail of complaint sent to police. I hope that so many people send in complaints that this tragic incident will go down in police history as having got a record number of complaints and thus will remind police staff not to let anything like this happen again. Eleanorxxxxx

Have cross posted the email addresses for Lothian and Borders Police and the local councillor on to Sighthounds online's site. Hope this is OK. There are a lot of very angry owners south of the border too who want to make their feelings known.
This situation is absolutely appauling and disgusting. I really dont have any words to express how furious i am about this. As for the police to make a comment like : "Issues like dereliction of duty will have to be looked at but, at the end of the day, there was no ill intent. "It was down to human error and the officer involved will feel awful." Is just beyond me. I hope something happens disciplinary to this man and also to the officer who took over from him at the station. At the change of shifts everything that happened that day shoudl be passed on to the on- comming shift. Even if he did not pass on verbally about the dog, the paperwork would still have been at the main desk. This is bringing the Police Force into Disripute and as far as i'm aware, thats a dismissable offence.
Its terrible but this sort of thing happens quite often, (that they forget about the dog, not that it dies). When i worked at the Dog and Cat Home in Edinburgh, quite often when police drivers would come in to drop off a stray dog, they would joke saying "it'll be hungry - its been in the cell for 3 days! - so and so forgot about it". Im sure this has only been brought to light because this time sadly the dog has died. Something must be done and i hope lessons have been learned from this.
