..firstly thanks to amanda for the tip off!

A new website has just been launched to highlight the plight of the BLACK Greyhound, seems GAL ain't the only Greyhound Charity that has problems homing black dogs, anyways this new site is worth a visit - http://www.blackbeauties.org.uk/ - you might spot some of your favourite black GAL dogs on the site too..

What a great idea!  Loads of GAL dogs on there too.  Here's hoping it gets some interest.

I wonder why it's so difficult to re-home the black ones. I think they look glossy, sleek and especially graceful and, as far as I can see, the colour of the dog makes no difference at all. How many people would choose their children based on hair colour????

I don't understand it either!  They look fantastic.  I still really want a black one so watch this space (sadly I don't think it will be that soon because Graeme's still resisting with all his might!).

What a fantastic site. I really hope it does make a difference to the homing figures for the black dogs, All the rescue sites always seem to have so many of them and they always seem to be the last to find homes.
I don't understand peoples reluctance to home them, i love the shiny coats on my two and i am still drawn to the the black ones.

Great idea and it will be interesting to see how it effects the homings

What a great site, but heart breaking how the list of dogs just goes on and on.
The black ones all have such sweet cheeky faces. I don't understand how they can be over looked either.
Fingers crossed it helps a few get homes.

There are so many, it really is a sin. Dave, how many dogs are on gals books just now, and how many are black?
I know Dan and our friends dogs sometimes have a wee bark at black dogs more than others. We have discussed it a few times and we think it might be something to do with the fact that you can't always tell what their facial expressions are from a distance. It might be nonsense, but seems to make sense, in a strange sort of way.
Don't know why people overlook them though. We would have taken our 2 no matter what colour they were. Its personality that gets you...
They are all so cute. I'm a fan of the older ones generally, but wee Mo......awwwww!

Barrie.

Its really weird. My first and third greys were/is black, Whit wasnt the most handsome dog but to me he was gorgeous and very special. Teidi is beautiful, glossy, velvety, with heart-melting eyes. But colour is the last thing that I would consider important, its an expression or a story or a character that just makes something click into place.

I've always loved black dogs. I had no idea before we joined GAL that they were unpopular. Greyhounds do tend to go grey round the snout quite young and that does show up more on a black dog. Daz has little grey eyebrows too! We said we didn't mind what colour dog we got when we applied for Daz (maybe that's why we got a black one! - that and the fact that he is perfect for us, proving that that GAL selection system is great)

Just out of curiosity and because of the fact that there are just so many black greyhounds on the rescue sites, can anyone tell me...

Do organisations like GAL take all dogs that they have room for no matter what colour they are? Just wondered if there are any rescues out there that may turn down the black dogs knowing that they might be more difficult to home. I know that GAL always seem to have lots black dogs on the books and so do the other greyhound rescue organisations so i would hope that turning away a dog because of it's colour is not common practice anywhere And then i had another thought that maybe in most cases the colour etc of the dog is possibly not known at the time of arranging to take the dog onto the books for re-homing or rescues are MORE likely to take the black ones knowing how hard it can be to find homes for them.

I love the black ones and am always drawn to them. Think my favourite girl looking for a home just now is GAL's Bindy, her muzzle looks so long in the pic on the homeless page

Hiya

I think i mentioned this to Dave a few years ago......
I breed/show Whippets - a pure black Whippet is to die for in the Whippet world!!! Top breeders would all LOVE to have a black Whippet!
I only know of one black Whippet (and she has a whitechest)-
she is the only one showing in Scotland & England!
You do get black racing whippets i believe. Due to line breeding/colour genetics it`s very rare to see a black Whippet in the show ring. As we dont outcross very often, its unlikely we will ever have a black onecry

AND I WANT ONE LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Landess, I dont know if you have seen my Mac, but when I was looking to take on another dog after Kaz died, I asked Dave if he could get me a 'small' greyhound. I have carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands and lifting a large dog could be a problem.  He phoned and told me he had found a perfect small black greyhound. I now refer to Mac as my little black whippet, who weighs in at just over 34kgs!!! weirdfaceThanks Dave!

LOL Dawn I have met Mac the first time i met him he did the greyhound lean on me, biggrin  small and dainty he ain't, but he was totally lovable

So if we can't shrink those black greyhounds down we need to get all those whippet owners thinking BIG wink.

I've just looked at the homeless page for the first time in a while (makes me want what I can't havecry) and there is 16 black greyhounds Its a shame people can't see past the colour and see the dog. A few weeks in a loving home and those black coats are soon shining.

Can't we start a rumour that Black greyhounds are really rare wink biggrin

I'll start it
