Who out there brushes their dogs teeth? We've tried and given up after a few attempts to brush Pearly's and Harry's teeth - they jsut don't stay still!

I had to give up on Mason cos he refused to stand still although he is normally v. good at letting you look in his mouth.
Now I give him a dentastick at night and occasional bones to try and keep them healthy.
When I had my cat you could get toothpaste which was given as a treat and she licked it from my finger. It then worked by being moved around her mouth by her tongue.
I don't know if there is a similar type for dogs since brushing is a no-no?

I do! It is hard work, but they in various stages of objection do let me get most of thier teeth. I also give them raw bones though not often ( runny bottom syndrome)PHEW!!!!! and dentasticks. Nora

Yes, Biscuit gets his done after his last toilet walk at night (when I remember) I use a special enzymatic dog toothpaste, which hopefully stays in the mouth to break down plaque.  It's a bit of a caper trying to brush his teeth, because as I'm trying to scrub, he's busy trying to lick the paste.

We brush Tilly's teeth (when we remember) we use tea-tree oil toothpaste (i know sounds horrible but she loves it!) and a toothbrush we got at Pets at Home.  Tilly actually quite enjoys it as she gets a huge fuss and a treat afterwards.  We also give her a dentastix after her evening meal and she gets rawhide chews occassionally.  Suppose it's perseverance getting them used to having their teeth done and they'll eventually accept that it's part of their routine.

My pair love it. They stand for ages the only problem i have is stopping Sunny chewing the brush and nudging me for more. I don't know how well it works because Sunnys teeth don't look to great.cry

I use baby toothbrushes with "poultry"flavour blehtoothpaste I got from the vet.

I scrape any plaque off Caspers teeth with a 5p coin his teeth are sparkly I don't really have to do it that often, just once every couple of months. I have been meaning for ages to get one of those scraper things dentists use and the vet nurses use when doing doggy dentals, but haven't got round to it yet. I tried a toothbrush but it was too much hassle, and it didn't get the plaque off very well. One of those finger toothbushes would be better I would think than one with a handle. It depends what mood Casper is in whether it is easy or not to scrape his teeth, same as when I cut his nails, sometimes he just lies and seems to enjoy it, and other days he jumps up and runs away, or tries to chew me as I do it

I tried doing Daz's when he was new because we weren't sure if his smelly breath was to do with his teeth. He doesn't mind though was not enthusiastic. But we realised that his breath is more to do with a tendency to colitis and poor digestion so I gave up bothering with his teeth as his dried kibble seems to keep his teeth pretty clean. They do have dentastix sometimes to chew on too.

I gave up on trying to brush, the dogs hated it and it was pretty difficult. Now I just leave them with a constant supply of bones - can be messy when they are fresh, but very effective. Once the yummy stuff has been scraped off and the bones are dry, there shouldnt be a problem with runny bottoms, and the bones are clean and dont smell, but the dogs still enjoy a chew. My vet says their teeth are an advert for all dogs. Occasionally I use a dental wipe, from Pets at Home, which they seem to be happy with, but I'm not convinced these are sufficiently effective on their own.

I don't brush my dogs teeth. If they are lying sleeping i sometimes give them a wee scrape with my finger! They get plenty rawhides and bones to chew on and with the dry food they seem to keep pretty clean. When i first got Willow, his teeth were minging and his breathe stank - with getting the dry food and bones they have cleaned themselves and his breathe no longer stinks!

Think I'll stick to the marrow bones - seems to be the only thing they can't swallow within 5 mins! They get dry food but it never hits the sides - they swallow it like a hoover.

If their teeth got worse, they seem to be okay just now,I reckon they'd need knocked out to get a decent clean.

Liked the one about the 5p coin - that got me thinking.

I'd never thought of scraping it off.bleh  I might try the 5p idea too. As for the finger brush i thought about it but the way Sunny chews her toothbrush I'd be worried I'd lose a finger. cry

Don't you wish they made denta stix in Greyhound size they don't even get a chance to touch Sunnys teeth she eats them in one. yawn Zoe can chew on them for ages but I'm sure she just draws it out to annoy Sunny. biggrin
