I`ve been around dogs all my life, my family breed, show work and train dogs. I think I know it all lol! I also know you shouldn`t throw sticks for dogs to retrieve, so why did I do it last weekend in the Lake District??? I was playing with my 21 week old Lab pup (who swims like a fish and loves to retrieve from water). The sun was shining and we were having a great time! I`d thrown the stick into the water, "Logan" swam out to retrieve it but on his return, as he scrambled up the embankment he fell onto the stick. His screams were horrendous. I drove like an eejit up the M6 to take him to the vet. The damage - a 1" hole in his soft palate right through to his nose!
Logan is now recovering and although has a very sore mouth, is still happy and bouncy!
You have no idea how bad and stupid i feel.
Please, please - don`t chance it - NEVER EVER throw a stick!!!!!
Poor wee Logan, its so easy just to forget and chuck a stick. I have done it myself several times with Eva if she brings a stick to me - i chuck it though i know its a bad move. Hope he recovers soon
Sha, accidents happen and there is no point of beating your self up about it. The main thing is that lovely Logan is OK and back to his bouncy self again. give him lots of hugs and licks from Cas,Sasha and Rag XXX Nora

Hope Logan gets well soon. It's good of you to post this, even though you feel bad, cos it does help experienced and beginners learn how easily these things can happen, just as you were both enjoying yourselves. You just have to say it was a freak accident, and I'm sure you will be giving Logan lots of TLC.
Glad Logan is O.K. But, I know how you feel. You always think it is not going to happen to your dog as you are with them and keeping an eye on them. These things happen so easily. I bought a pet shop smoked bone not so long ago and Jack had it in splinters. I was worried sick, fortunately, he was O.K, but I keep a closer eye on him now when he has a bone. I make sure it is a as thick as possibe at both ends. Don't feel too guilty about Logan, these things happen and we learn by our mistakes. Marian.
Logan will be fine - don't blame yourself over this, accidents do happen. he'll make a great recovery and forget all about it, you should try to do the same. hugs to you all, xxxx
Poor Logan - what a horrible accident. I'm sure he'll forget the whole experience a lot sooner than you do! The mouth heals quickly and I'm sure he'll be back to normal in no time.
Please Sha, don't feel so bad about throwing the stick for Logan. It was an accident, and I'm sure Logan being so young, will heal quickly. It's great he's so happy and bouncy regardless of his sore mouth - what a brave wee soul!
I too know that throwing sticks for a dog to chase is not a good idea - but I have to say I've done it too as Dixie loves to pick up sticks and toss them in our general direction to get us to play! Now we always try to have at least one hard ball with us for her to chase instead of a stick.
Hope Logan's mouth is better soon! Let us know how he's getting on and big hugs to the wee chap!
My three all seem to quite like sticks too but they throw them themselves! I've also thrown sticks for Wills from time to time and, like everyone else, know I shouldn't!
Thanks you all so much. Logans mouth has healed up really quickly, phew! He is eating like a horse and is a very bouncy happy puppy again. I now make sure I always have a toy to throw when we go out walking - lesson learned!
Thanks for posting that, I have also had dogs of different kinds all my life, but it has never crossed my mind that this sort of accident could happen. Thats the value of these forums, we can all learn without having to make all the mistakes first. Glad Logan is so much better
