this is an interesting topic. what does everyone do with their dog waste? i put mine in the general household rubbish (wrapped, of course) which gets collected once a week.

is there an alternative??

I'm certainly for the biodegradable bags. As our local nature park does not have bins/poo bins because they constantly get wrecked by vandals, this has resulted in poo bags lying about everywhere!! Hope they catch on and become easily available in stores too.

It seems that Local Councils will eventually have to charge us for the rubbish we produce. So the more waste we recycle the better.
Did anyone see the Channel 4 programme on Thursday night. In Belgium they charge over 2 Euros for a Wheelie Bin of non recycled waste.
Mind you what stops naughty neighbours filling your bin with their waste?

Was also reading that some plastic bags dont rot for over 100 years. So dog waste in these is not good when compared to speed of decomposition by slugs / bacteria etc

Someone donated some of those bags to my work, although they are very good in that they are biodegradeable, they are also very narrow - not ideal for the "larger" dog!

I'm all for the environment too and we tried a dog loo in our garden about 10 years ago it couldn't even cope with the waste from one greyhound let alone two or more! What a pong!!!
I will be interested in how you get on and if they have improved at all!

Our local council have now supplied our local chemist with poo bags free of charge,it has saved a small fortune having 3 large greys,also they have put up in the local dog walking area bins that are for the bags only and it gets removed and cleaned twice weekly.....Good on the council,we have been on at them for 3 mnths now and at last......

hello all,
I use bio-degradeable nappy sacks from Lidl, they cost about 70p for 250 and are scented. There are regularly environmental wardens in the area and have handed out a few fines to some unscrupulous dog owners, but there is a severe lack of litter bins beside the notices to clear up after your dog!

Lidl always seem to come up trumps! What colour are the nappy bags though? This isn't a fashion question, it's just that I can't bare being able to see the offending poos once in the bag as I have to carry it for quite a bit before I come across bins suitable in my area...

I use the good old nappy sacs the scented ones help a bit. If you check out www.muksak.com they have a handy dog poo carrier and £9.99 plus p&p it holds one litre capacity. Sorry not on commision I just know what it is like to have pocket full of poo bags "yuchhhh" .

the bags from lidl are pink, they are cheap enough to double up so you can't see through!

Harley prefers to use Sainsbury's own brand - they are flesh coloured but not too see through ashamed

Also they have a nice smell which his mum likes biggrin

I just used nappy sacks from Tesco, think its about 200 for 82p. On the downside, they are see through (pale green) but there are plenty bins where i walk my lot. I couldn't afford anything more expensive as with 4 large dogs i go through quite a few!!

It was good when i stayed in Musselburgh as the East Lothian Council hand out free poo bags but in the west of Edinburgh where i am now, they don't hand out free poo bags

These sound good - very, very reasonable price for biodegradable bags. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the tip! smile

We use Makro's own brand bags - no idea if they're biodegradable, but I doubt it... They're a little more expensive (£1.70 for 300) but are larger than any others I've found, and a purple colour that's reasonably opaque.

Disposing of waste locally is difficult - in Falkirk we only have a fortnightly collection, and after 13 days the pong is a bit much. I'd be interested in anything that smells less (or smells no more and is more green).

Hi Everyone,

Despite the legislation etc dog owners still flout the law. I work for Glasgow City Council Land & Environmental Services Dept Parks.
I was involved with a small Green Fair today on a small Park in the Yorkhill area of Glasgow.
Before we could erect gazebos ec we had to spend ages clearing the area of dog waste. I reckon I cleared a full large bucket full. That would be over £1000 worth of fines at £50 a go.
It's wrong in an area where thee are plenty bins / dog waste bins.

So please ensure yoy pick up!!! Someone has to!

ps note Glasgow City Council now has a dedicated force of Litter Wardens 50 in number issuing £50 tickets. They mean business and are kitted out with Kevlar knife proof vests! 125 fines issued in first week. ( last week) Litter, fag ends. chewing gum, dog waste etc

Bizarrely, I've wondered a bit about that myself! Not the fine issue but whether folk would be annoyed at the dogs lifting their leg on a garden plant that has grown over onto the pavement or on the outside of their garden wall.
Answers on a postcard...

We don't tend to let the dogs piddle on people's plants, regardless of how bushy they are and how much they encroach onto the pavement. Much as the dogs would like to! There's a particular house on our night-time potty walk route with a big patch of ivy that they always pull like dafties to sniff at. I know they'd like nothing better but to add their scent to it.

The way I see it is that I don't like the dogs pishing on my own plants (they're trained to go in a particular area in the garden - we're so strict with our two!

) so we don't like them to do it on other people's.

Wow that's good to hear, when or should that be if I get my grey lol.... I will be asking how that works.... In fact perhaps I should know now for when daughters dog comes along..
