QUOTE FROM RITA BARTLETT (DOG WORLD) June 22nd 2007 "A few weeks ago I asked for views on witholding Crufts qualifications and Stud Book placings from racing Greyhounds. I have had a lot of views all of which have been supportive of the showing of racers. Many remarked that those exhibitors currently showing racers are very likely to graduate to showing a show Greyhound in the future so it is important to encourage and be supportive of them." What is your opinion ? Nora

Tricky one Nora. I'd be a bit worried about people getting the competitive breed showing "trying to win at all costs" addiction which tends to mean breeding to try and get a winner and beautiful as they are I am not over the moon about thinking of the grey population being expanded with litters of show pups that haven't made the grade being put on the pet market when rescue orgs have heaps of deserving ex racers looking for homes. Once the show bug bites the temptation to breed seems almost irresistable and as far as bigger dogs go....few breeders have the space and money to guarantee that if a pup doesn't work out in a home it can be returned to the breeder. You only have to look at the free ads bits on the web to see rotties, gsds even staffies etc being offered cheap to new homes...usually around the terrible two year old stage. I am tempted to think that "Requiring a new home through no fault of its own " in some instances means.....I bought this dog and it behaves as young dog of its type tends to do but didn't fully understand what I was taking on. That is one of my reservations I have heaps more but that one is enough. Lots of love Eleanor xxxxxxx PS JFI Someone with more grey knowledge than I have could probably point out the differences between show bred greys and most racers. To my shame the only difference that I can remember from days gone by is that the breed show greys tend to be bigger and I think that there tends to be a difference in the shape of the rib cage? If I could remember all that I have forgotten I would be brilliant . I can see my going to have to rumage around in the dust and cobwebs to unearth more old dog books.
