Hi folks.  Just joined this forum thingy and thought i'd put up pics of my girl.  She's called Misti (racing name is Fridays Mystic) and we've had her for about 6 weeks. She's four just now, turns five in november.

She's black with white chest and paws.  We waited a while for a bitch like her to come up.  She's quite a big bitch at 66lbs, and she's quite long too. She's setting in really well, almost too well to believe!!!  No bin raiding, counter surfing, seperation anxiety, none of the usual bad habits, everything is going well.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sounds as though you have a good one there in Misti she sounds adorable. It is pretty scarey when they take off like that but sounds like you are doing everything just fine for her recall and the prey drive. Sadly I could not see your photo,s but it could be my PC LOL. Hope to hear a lot more about Misti and yourself, and well done in what you have achieved together in only 6 weeks. biggrin Nora
P.S. 66 LBS ???? WOW!!!!

Hi Nora,  Thanks for the reply.  She raced at 65lbs, and has put on a pound or two since i got her.  I'm kinda waiting for the bubble to burst as it's going so well!!! smile  Just trying not to push her too far too soon.

Thanks. She didn't arrive like that though. I've changed her food to 18% protein and it has a bit more oils and stuff in it. That really helped her, seemed to mellow her out a bit.

She's had a couple of showers and i've been grooming her everyday with a Zoom Groom and her coat is really getting good now. When she came she had major kennel coat, baldy bum etc. It's taking a bit of work to get her nice, but it's like my hobby now. I love it!!!

Welcome to the forum! Misti is beautiful and ever so posh with her crossed paws! She's a quick learner too - it's great her recall is so good in such a short time! Looking forward to hearing more about her and hope to meet you with her at one of the GAL events soon.

Hi Welcome to the forum.  Isn't your girl just absolutely beautiful - and what a wonderful coat you''ve obviously been taking super care of her.

I know what you mean about letting them off for the first time - it is nerve racking and you pray that they come back, but the joy of seeing them run in the open air, probably, for the first time because want to and not because they have to, brings a tear to my eye everytime...heart.gif

Look forward to more pics of your gorgeous girl

If you can share any tips on how you've managed to achieve such good recall I'd be grateful  - we've had Max for just over 3 months now, and when we're out he only comes back when there's nothing better to chase/sniff/eat.

We've been using treats to teach recall in the house, but all the good work goes out the window when we're out  - he's far too nosey!

PS - she's beautiful.....and obviously adores the camera!

I'm still a total novice myself, but i'll tell what i've learned so far, might be all wrong though!!!

It's a long one, but i'll tell you all the experiences i've had so far. Pull up a seat!!

I read loads of stuff on the net and the Greyhound for Dummies book before i got her. But i ended up getting really confused as there is so much conflicting advice on how to recall

Thanks.  She is quite long when she stands up though.  And she's got those buck teeth if you look under her jaw.  lmao.gif

I really wanted a small faun bitch.  You know the ones that look really dainty and have those gorgeous wee faces.   But Misti had the right personality and i think she's great now.

Hello, welcome to the forum, your girl is beautiful. Are you the guy who stopped the car in Hallglen a couple of weeks back to talk to me when I was walking my two greys? Apologies if you're not but your posting sounded familiar.Anyway if you are that same person I'm glad you found the forum and hope it's useful.

Hi - nice shiny pooch you have indeed.

We've got two - one is a kind of neurotic dizzy slightly timid but cheeky grey (Pearly) and the other a handsome big leggy affectionate one but with a prey drive off the scale. The big one (Harry) will lunge at any dog that comes close to him and will pounce on anything furry and small given the chance. He's muzzled all the time which isn't a prob. We do the treat thing to distract him best we can when other dogs walk past - works most times but he still likes a good lunge and growl and all the normal things dogs do when they have fear aggression.

On recall - took us a few months first of training before we let them loose and they still only get off in a couple of fields that are enclosed. They come back using different things ranging from a squeaker for Harry and a whistle for Pearly - chicken and cheese is an incentive too.

Still, we can only let Harry off for short periods when we know other animals are nowhere to be seen - he's obsessed with a squeaky toy so he plays around with that - I throw, he chases and pounces and since he has a muzzle on I can take it off him without losing fingers - he gets very snappy when it comes to play outdoors and his toys! Otherwise - like only 5 mins ago - he let me take a marrow bone out of his mouth no problem.

We are under no illusion though that it is pointless blowing whisltes and squeakers when they are on the chase after a deer or rabbit or whatever - they just go and that is that. You have to manage the risk as best you can - hence ours only get off in a secluded field where it is tricky for them to keep running off into danger - although they've managed to chase deer out into the sand dunes before. I let them both off on the beach when it is quiet too - when the tide is right out.

Harry's prey drive will never go until he's doddery and old - he can remember where he saw a cat weeks ago and will always look to see if it is there again. All doggies are different and you'll have lots of fun finding out their own personality - we still see changes after a year or two.

Know exactly what you mean - Tigger found a frog three days ago and has been looking for it at the same spot every day since.  Problem is, it is still there strolling about in the long grass.  biggrin

What a lovely shiney doggie you have there. The black coats always shine so beautifully and she is just gorgeous.

As long as you are responsible -muzzle if you are in public and you are unsure if something could appear that could cause her to chase (smaller doggies, cats etc) then you should be fine. Over time she will improve to a degree but I really think that most greyhounds can never really be trusted 100 per cent.I have owned 4 in my time and two would never stop chasing even if ill or hurt in the chase. The others could be trusted but not with cats and if they see something they can be gone in a blink.

You sound like you are doing all the right stuff and you must be feeding her well otherwise her coat would suffer. You are doing an amazing job, welcome to you and the lovely Mystic.

Em and Chad x
