Hi well we have had a bad day or so with Red.  He suddenly was very nervous.  Joyce came to see him and he seemed very subdued when taken out on his lead.  Later on in the day I took him and Lenny a collie cross out for a walk.  We were sat on a bench on the front when a man with a walking stick came by Red really flipped very anxious and did his jumping up and going backwards almost hanging himself at the time over the bench. (slight graze to back leg).  While this happened Lenny was barking loudly (he does do this).  It seemed to be the stick that was the problem think may have had some hitting in his background to get this sudden reaction...  From then on tho he didn't return to the Red we have got to know.  Couldn't get him into the car.  Then couldn't get him out again.  Once in the house took to his bed and shivered and shaked for a long time.  We left him alone and just made lots of guiet reassuring noises.  Ate is tea okay.  But later wouldn't go out for a walk at all.  Once coaxed out he shook continuously and after a few yards I turned back with him and he positively rushed to come home.  We got no wags etc for the rest of the night and the same has happened today.  Left him to be quiet today as much as possible and hoping that when I try to take him out tonight he will be happy to come.  Any advise on what I can do to help when he gets these scares.  I realise that things will come up that are frightening for him.  I just want some advice on how to deal with it at the moment it happens and also how to help him later as well.

Poor Red.  If he's no happier, perhaps if Tigger came for a walk with him he'd be happier - another grey to speak to.  Millie freaks from time to time at strange men (especially with sticks) although she's never been quite as shaken as that.  Sorry, can't offer anything else at present.  hmm

Have you considered a DAP spray or diffuser to help calm him down?  It's something you might use after an incident - using it near his bed.

Hi Sandy

I'm sorry to hear that Red has had a bad couple of days.  I saw you on the front when we were coming back from a walk and wished I'd stopped to give you some support, but obviously I had no idea that Red was upset.

I hope that Red is calming down a wee bit and that his confidence will increase daily.

Keep us posted on his progress.

Take care.

Joyce

Thanks for the suggestions and I would love to go with you and tigger soon.  And Joyce thanks for the thought.  At least we must have looked like we were doing good when you passed.  i am sure he will be fine very soon.  He showed a lot of interest in Rob's sandwiches (corned beef) just now so may take a few wee bits with me to help get him to come for a walk for a short time.

What and where do I get a DAP spray? Sure my daughter will know but thought I would ask anyway?  I have considered using bach's rescue remedy in his water anyone used this with their dogs before.  I use it for me and thought it might be benificial for him too...

There are lots of dog websites selling the DAP spray, and I think they are in Pets at Home and pet stores etc., and yes you can use Rescue Remedy on dogs, tho' I wouldn't be able to say the dosage.  Again, there may be folks on here or other sites which will gives the dosage.

If you type DAP into the search on here (at top of red bar) you will bring up all the threads mentioning it.

You are more than welcome to have Mason's DAP. I bought it when he was kicking off in the house when left alone but since the problem turned out to be a nutty neighbour winding him up it did little to help. He did like snoozing next to it in the evening thoughsmile and I hear it does help lots of dogs relax.
You can get refills at vets and I'm sure Pets At Home will stock them.
If you're going to the show on Sunday I'll bring it along, otherwise PM me an address and I'll get it to you.
Marie

Brill thanks for all the advice. I am going to the gala on Sunday so will look out for you and would love to try the DAP spray. Taken Red and Lenny out in the car today to the beach and it went not too bad.  Not many people about so a nice quiet way to get him over his wee scare.  Thanks to you all for the support this forum is the best and it so helps knowing someone out there has done it all before and got the tee-shirt.
See you all on Sunday and looking forward to meeting you all.
