Well it's been a long day, my back is killing me and my knuckles are all bleeding, but the canine colditz is upsmile Bess watched from the roof of the log shed, I just hope she wasn't working on an escape plan. The roof is on and I stood Bella at the side of the shed so I could draw round her to make sure I cut a big enough hole for her to fit in and out the kennelbiggrin I took the three of them up to the pond for a nice walk, before I have a shower and hit the gin, Bella let out one of her 'I've found something' howls, while sniffing about in the vegitation round the edge of the pond. The others went to see and Bess came to get me, she ran back and forth to the thick vegitation until I followed her (a bit like Lassie on speed) when I waded in to the soggy stuffdoh I found a duck caught in fishing gut with two hooks stuck in it, none of the dogs were touching it, they just sat and watched while I tried to get it out. I carried the duck, complete with hooks and a large soggy pile of vegitation, back to the car (a good half mile and I had to climb a gate) I managed to get the hooks out when I got home and I got the duck to drink a little water. It's resting in a box in the bedroom where it's nice and quiet. I don't know how badly it's hurt, but if it hasn't recovered soon I'll phone the rspbcry I'm so chuffed that none of the dogs  tried to harm the duck, unlike the baby rat that Bella killed yesterday, she presented it to me while we were walking round a field, she looked quite hurt that I didn't want to carry it home with mehmm

I think you deserve a treble gin from the sounds of the day you have had! Poor little duck..that's great that the dogs didnt touch it though. Your kennel sounds good, is it the Beddy x that's the escape artist? There's always one, isnt there? Go and have a relaxing evening..you deserve it!smile

Glad you have the dogs fortress up and sorted, lets hope the little darlings don,t make all your hard work worthless by escaping. What a lovely story about the way the dogs were about the duck and so clever of Bess to come and get you, Bess and Bella seem to have settled so well with Cara and you. Hope the ducks ok, they are very fond of dandelions and sweet grass roots if you want to feed it something. GOOD LUCK WITH THE KENNEL !! biggrin Nora. Have a gin on me.

Duck looking much better, having a good splash about with the water I gave it. Thanks for the food tips Nora, I'll go and get it somethingwink It had a hook in its wing and one in its foot so I'll see if it can walk/fly in the morning. I'm full of gin and the wee poppets are in their cage (so far, so good), yes Abbey, it is the Beddie x that likes to jump outfurious I'll post some photos when I have recovered the ability to focusweirdface

I think it's a clever ploy. The duck will teach the dogs to fly!! Well has no-one seen chicken run?

Seriously, well done, what a lucky duck, not eaten by doggies and rescued by someone who obviously just can't resist anything in need.

Keep us posted on duck and dogs.

It's wonderful that Bess came to direct you to the injured duck, Anne! And that Bella and Cara stayed with it until you arrived. What a lucky escape it had! So glad you're on hand to give it some TLC and a chance to recover - hope it's ok very soon.

Good luck with the doggy keep!

Christine

                                           Duck
                                              A
                             Peacefully in it's sleep on
                             30th Aug 2007. A private
                             funeral service has been
                             held for A. Duck. Thank
                             you to everyone for their
                             kind thoughts.

After a good splashing about in the makeshift pond, the duck settled down with it's head under it's wing and went to sleep. When I checked on it this morning it was still in the same position, but in a MUCH deeper sleepcry

Looking on the bright side, Bella and Bess were still in their run this morningsmile

Sorry that the duck has gone to the great pond in the sky after all your valiant effort, guess the shock of not being eaten by the dogs was just to much for it !!!!cry Nora

cry  Ach - poor duck.  Why can't fishermen pick up their crap after they've finished torturing fish?  furious  I hope he's having fun in the big pond in the sky with all his little quacky mates.

Apologies if I offend any fishermen out there but I personally don't really see the fun in hauling a creature out the water with a great hook stuck through it's gob and when you see the harm that their nets and hooks cause wildlife when they dump them, it makes me cross although I'm sure there are lots who pick up after themselves.

Glad to hear that Fort Dog has proved escape-proof so far.  Long may it continue.  wink

What a shame for poor Duck! But at least Bess, Bella, Cara and you gave it a chance. Irresponsible fishermen have a lot to answer for - countless wild birds feeding in water die or are badly injured by carelessly discarded fishing tackle every year. They're a menace!

Glad to hear the well-built Fort Dog seems to be working!
