Licking
Permalink Closed

Hello there.

I hope someone out there can help.

Charlie can't stop licking in the night. It is usually his feet. He has been checked over recently and his skin is fine. I have seen articles suggesting that this might be related to separation anxiety, but he only does it to excess in the middle of the night. We have one other dog and I work from home, so he is never alone.

He sleeps beside the bed and this is becoming a problem (neither my partner or I have slept well for a couple of weeks).

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Darren.

Sorry Darren, I've never come across this despite my greys testing me in just about every other area possible... Hope you manage to sort it soon - a bad night's sleep is always terrible!

Yep the sound of licking will keep you awake!! Sammy was licking his wounds so we put his muzzle on when he was going to bed at night and its stopped him doing this.

You could maybe try the muzzle for a few days/week and see if it helps break the habbit. And hopefully you'll get some sleep.....

Worth checking out the areas where you walk in case its something your dog is coming into contact with also worth checking your flooring /carpets at home in case its an allergic reaction to something you use in the house, some dogs are allergic to biological washing powder bedding is better washed in non bio powder/liquid and also regular use of fabric softener can sometimes affect pets.Could even be diet related, just a few ideas to help out, licking can drive you and the doggie mad!!!.

You said that you have another doggie... I know it perhaps sounds harsh but have you thought about gradually moving them out of your bedroom.
I only say this because we had two greys in our room at one point and they used to start growling and fighting over each others beds in the night. We used to spend the night telling them shush. We moved them onto the landing in desperation then down to the bottom of the stairs and then into the dining room. The whole move only took about a week.
When one died we bought the other straight back upstairs again (not sure whose need this was forfilling if I'm honest - the dogs or ours!). We then got another dog and moved them down again. Our remaining dog Chad(now an only dog) sleeps downstairs all the time and is perfectly happy on his own.He also has the fire which helps(lol)!
I feel sorry for you because no sleep can make you very grumpy and lacking in concerntration for work the next day!
Let us know how you get on.
Em and Chad xx

My mums Tibetal terrier licks and licks and licks at his paws, no problem ever found but it drives me mad when he stays with me. My mums deaf as a post so it doesn't bother her. Vet said it's just a habit he's got in to. When he stays with me he spends the night in another room (he's not bothered by this) I couldn't stand it if he was in the same room as I was trying to sleep in.furious

I couldn't tell you what Misti does throught the night as she's in her bed down in the kitchen. She does lick her front legs quite abit though if she's just lying about in the evening. I hear her thumping about sometimesthrough the night as she turns round and clatters off the radiator, but thats about it.

Like Emma said, could you not just move the dog out your bedroom. I know there are loads of people who sleep with their dogs in the same room or even on the bed. But i'm sure they'd get on just as well in their own beds in another room if there were problems.
