Dog Exercise Area
Permalink Closed

We were visiting Aden Country Park in Aberdeenshire last week and made use of their excellent Dog Exercise Area - a huge fenced off bit of the park - no fear of Tara running off and escaping and lots of space for herto run ( not that she did alot of that!!) I have been in touch with the Ranger service in West lothian to enquire if such a facility exists in the area. They have got back to say there isn't but they are interested to know more as they are always keen to improve services for their visitors. Before I get back to them I wondered if others have experience of these type of areas elsewhere? What particular features would make this facility attractive to use etc

There's a dog exercise area in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow - it's about half the size of a football pitch. It's great to let Max off for a good run....but only after he's sniffed every inch of grass, and annoyed every other dog by tailing them incessantly. Other than that there's just a park bench and some poo bins, so not that exciting, but still nice to have an enclosed area for him.

Dog parks are all the rage in the U.S, but I've only heard of the one in Glasgow over here.

I think West Lothian is a great idea, I've made inquiries in Edinburgh but discovered plans for one were scrapped because the city council refuses to allow dog poo bins to be put up anywhere in the cityweirdface.gif
I asked my local councillor to look into it and she responded that when she asked the environmental officers they told her dog parks were not wanted in Edinburgh because 'they smell'furious.gif
I've been to Bellahouston, it doesn't smell and Mason had a great time romping around.
Edinburgh is extraordinarily backwards sometimes.

Hi,

Blair and I decided to take Amelie to the dog area in Bellahouston Park this afternoon as it was a lovely day. We'd taken her there before and she really enjoyed it.

We know that it's a safe area for her to around in and we were confident that she couldn't run off anywhere ... that is until today!! She had been happily playing with some other dogs but after they left she decided that she wanted to explore a bit more of the park for herself! She had watched some of other dogs negotiate the gate and thus figured out how to get out.

We saw her walk over to the gate not thinking anything of it, but to our horror, she nimbly ran round the gate and she was off! We were off in quick pursuit and she trotted off in the direction of the sports area and then over towards the car park! Boy can she run!

Blair finally caught up with her and managed to secure her back on the lead again, much to our relief!

We thought great, a quick seat on the bench to get our breath back, and then we're off home. We didn't want to risk going back in to the enclosure again.

We then discovered that we had lost the car keys in our pursuit of Amelie! They had fallen out of Blair's trouser pocket! After a frantic look around Amelie's escape route we finally found them, thankfully!

We're all back home but we're exhausted!

We'll now have to think of how to secure the gate to the enclosure for the next time so that she doesn't decide to go and explore again!

Janice

Hi all,

In australia there are some great dog areas some even have mini agility courses. They also provide poo bag dispensers everywhere.

I was up at kelvingrove park running the other day & I am pretty sure they have a dog run area maybe not that big but something. Also queens park has a very intresting run area ... there are no gates on either end :0( so not very secure.

Glasgow green also has a run area but from I remeber the gates were missing on that.

Dog parks smell?? based on what i wonder how they came to that, none of the parks here smell they are either gravel base or bravel/grass area split. the really nice one out of town a but has a large grass area, a wooded area and a gravel area!! Noe of them smell they have large bins filled with gravel so you can fill in any holes the dogs make generally the dog owners keep them clean and a couple of them even have their own committees to arrange parties on summer?!?!
The Poo bins are just your usual household wheely bins and there are shovels and rakes provided for cleaning up after your dog!

The ones close to houses have a curfew from 22-07 so there are no barking dogs annoying people but the remote ones are free always.

The gates here have latches like farm gates so its quite a special dog that can get one open. It strikes me as odd that they won't supply a poo bin when they fine you for not picking up the dog poo in the first place, whats next a fine for using the "normal" bucket for poo?!?!?

Backwards is not the word!!

Barshaw Park has two dog areas. One is a snad floored area with a mid height fence, which is good for us as Arwen isn't a jumper. The other is too near sheep for my liking, not an issue with Arwen, but the other 2 pace and lick their chops (no pun) watching the sheep.

I thought Bellahouston's area not that good, as the fence that faces the road isn't (or wasn't the last time I went) in good repair.
