I have been bitten by the greyhound bug and would like to adopt a rescue greyhound. I am shortly moving to a property with a small courtyard garden - does anyone know if this is likely to affect my chances in adopting a greyhound? I don't know if the rescue organisations only rehome to people with large gardens. I'm quite active and would be able to walk / run the dog twice a day for about 30mins each time.
Also I work all day but do go home most days for my lunch break - is this likely to be ok for a greyhound? I gather they sleep a lot. Do any of you work full time and have greyhounds?
I would be really grateful for any guidance as I want to make sure I have a happy dog!
Your best option is to fill out an adoption form and take it from there if you're really serious about getting a greyhound. GAL take all individual cases into consideration, a big garden is not an essential having a secure garden of some sort is preferable and generally as long as the pooch isn't left alone for more than 4 hours at a time and doesn't have seperation anxiety issues wokring full time shouldn't be an issue. I live in a flat with a fairly small shared back garden but we have some good areas near by to walk the dog 2 or 3 times a day. Until recently hubby and I both worked full time and hubby popped home at lunch time to walk our grey who we've now had for 5 months, this was enough to meet her needs. I'm now at home all the time due to other commitments, don't worry not doggie commitments hehe. I'm not saying you'll have to cut your hours or anything.
Fill out a form and give it a go. As long as there's reasonable space at home and tons of space in your heart i'm sure GAL will help you find your perfect pooch to give a forever home to. Good luck and keep us posted
Hiya,You sound as if you have been doing your homework, get that form filled in asap!!GAL will take all you have said into consideration, all sorts of people with all kind of working hours keep greys each application is treated on its own merits, you will be contacted when you apply and a home visit can be arranged, usually someone with a dog will come to see you,you can apply online, there are lots of dogs on the books and here at the kennels,so what are you waiting for.!!keep us informed.
So pleased you are thinking of adopting a greyhound!
First thing is to fill out your adoption application (which you can do online), this will then lead to a home check, where you would be visited by one of our homecheckers who normally bring a greyhound with them for you to meet. Once you have passed your home check, the homing coordinator will try to pair you up with a dog appropriate to your lifestyle.
Having a large garden is not essential, lots of people who live in flats with no garden own greyhounds. As long as there are nice places for them to walk that is the most important thing. As for working full-time, most of us do, I did myself until starting my own business and Annie had a dog walker who came in for an hour everyday. The most important thing is to give the dog a lovely safe home where they can be loved.
We've just got a lurcher after years of wrestling with whether we should or not and now I don't know why I worried so and wish I'd done it years ago.
We both work full-time and Misty is taken out Mon-Fri by a dog walker (we couldn't get home at lunch time). What with that and her walk in the morning and evening, our girl is flaked out.
I'm sure GAL will be more than happy to help you in your search for a doggy companion!
Hey Jayne - your circumstances are the same as mine were last year when I was looking to adopt. I filled a form on the site & one of the GAL folks came out to the house for a chat about week later & within a month they found Skye for us. I have a Collie cross (little rescued boy) & also a rabbit who all get on amazingly well. QUICK - FILL OUT A FORM!!!
Welcome to the forum! Please don't be put off by the idea of a home check. I was and got a greyhound from the cat and dog home with no knowledge of his background. He's still with me but has proved a challenge ever since! However, after a home check from GAL, I was matched with a dog that perfectly suited us and our lifestyle. She's perfect. The home check is simply about giving you all the info you need and ensuring you are matched with the right dog. I'm in a flat and work full-time but there are good walks nearby and my dad pops in every day at lunch to take them out. Good luck and let us know how you get on
I agree, go for it. I live in a flat and I am uni full time but I get home around lunchtime to walk Jet and it's fine, in fact he's not a bit bothered by being left alone and is generally alseep and doesn't know when I leave nor does he usually bother to get up when I return!! Get the right dog and it'll be fine.
Hi there, welcome to the forum and the wonderful word of greyhounds, i'm sure you'll have as much fun as i have with my boy, please keep us posted, good luck Denise & Rowen x
