Learning about Misty

What a fab month we've had seeing life as it is for our wonderful hairy beast. We've learnt so much and we have so much more to learn.

What we've learnt about Misty:
1. Food - When we first met her she wouldn't take any biscuits and we thought she wasn't motivated by food. How wrong were we!!!! She goes in to a bit of a frenzy every time we eat especially if we're having toasted cheese, square sausage, chinese chicken or crisps. So we can tell the diet of the old man who used to be her owner!

2. Food contd! - she is a complete carnivore and apart from the above, the old man has obviously fed her well. She didn't love chum etc, she wasn't keen on any dried food but after doing a lot of reading and after her attempting to chow in to a dead bird during her walk, we decided to try her on raw feeding. The reaction was fab. Really gimme gimme gimme, it takes her longer to eat it, she licks her lips for ages afterwards and she's very contented. It has also made a huge difference to her temperament (much more chilled with other dogs) and her hair (yay, the bald patches are growing back and we're convinced it is to do with improved diets). We did try her on fruit and veg as well as suggested by House Lurcher but the look of disgust was clear on her face. I'm getting really excited at seeing the results and I'm a vegetarian. Now I know some people don't agree with this method but it is working for us so please don't give me a hard time (just had a bit of zeal from the guy at Discount Pet Supplies on the subject - we had to agree to disagree).

3. Comfort! When we first got her, Misty didn't know how to get up on the sofa or the bed. We'd decided that we were okay with this as she didn't seem that interested. But I might have known that Mr Mac would break first. I came back from a night out and there they both were pleased as punch sitting on the sofa. Now Misty sits on my seat whenever I'm out but at least gives it up with a good grace when I get back. Plus she then comes back up and gives me a lovely cuddle.

4. Cold - She doesn't like the cold outside but prefers it inside! Before we got her her super green GAL coat, she would race for home as she was too cold/wet outside. Now she loves her coat and pokes her nose through her snood and wags her tail throughout. We think that she looks like a nun and have christened her Sister Misty of the Immaculate Canines. However at home it's a different matter. She can only take the comfort of the sofa or her nice comfy bed so long and then she likes to lie on the cold wooden floor.

5. The beach! She won't free run anywhere else but she loves the beach - oh the sand, the sea, the seaweed, a bunch of rocks, so much to see and do! We've let her off the lead at Croy beach and she was ecstatic. She was doing a horse trot and her tail was way up high. Her recall was fantastic which given all her excitement is very encouraging.

What we've still to learn about Misty
This is where you guys come in. I'm hoping that you can give some advice on the following

1. Photos - first and foremost, how do I upload photos on to this. I have a lovely picture of Sister Misty and various others. Have had a look at the how-to and guidelines but am not sure how to do this.

2. Free running - We've taken her to the dog park a few times and she won't free run even though we've given her the 'on you go' and ignored her and walked away. The only time she will free run is on the beach and we don't live close enough to make this an everyday. She just sticks very close by us. She will run between the two of us but of course there won't always be two walking her. Any advice? Is this just because she's unsure or is there something we can do to encourage her?

3. Toys/playing - Misty shows absolutely no interest in any toy whatsoever. I've tried her on squeaky toys, balls, the Buster Food Cube etc and she just looks at them, wags her tail and then turns away. I feel like a bad mum because I don't know if she's being stimulated enough but she just doesn't seem interested. Any thoughts?

4. To muzzle or not to muzzle - we're hoping that Misty will be off lead regularly soon. We've bought a muzzle but I'm swithering as to whether to use it. My concern was small dogs and cats but she doesn't show any prey instincts at all and she adores small dogs. Cats she tends to ignore. However I think it is a plan to keep her on muzzle for at least the first while until we're sure of her in all situations. Any thoughts?

On the narky with dogs thing, as I said, she seems to have improved a lot with this. She is even ignoring a Labrador that runs barking and snarling at her some mornings (don't worry, we've had a rant at the owner about her responsibilities under the Dangerous Dogs Act). We're taking her to see Viv Silverstein next week just so that we can make sure we're doing everything right for her. Will let you know how it goes!

Thanks for listening!

It sounds like she is fitting in very well!
On the toys front, I tried loads of toys with Mason with a similar non-reaction at first, the trainer at the behaviour classes we went to laughed when I tried to get hiim interested in a ragger telling me 'greyhounds, if it ain't living, it ain't worth chasing'biggrin.gif
As time has gone on though and he has seen other dogs playing he has shown a bit more interest. He has a moose which he stole at the GAL summer show forcing me to buy it which he likes - it makes a low groaning noise when squeezed, and I removed all the other toys figuring too much choice just made him lose interest.
Just last week he stunned me when I picked up a ragger I had been given for him at Christmas waved it at him jokingly (knowing I would get no reaction) only for him to grab it and play tug with me while wagging his tail furiously!!!
Of course he ignores it nowevileye.gif
On the muzzle, its absolutely personal choice. Mason is always muzzled offlead because he is an ex-racer and very 'keen' on cats even though he has never had a problem with dogs, of all sizes (except a chihuahua but he doesn't think its a dog)
My personal feeling is better safe than sorry, but you will be the one who comes to know your dog best, until you do though its always best to err on the side of caution.
Just don't expect too much too soon, it takes time. I've had Mason 18 months and he still makes improvements in his behaviour which surprise me.

Ah, misty sounds like she's doing well.

I agree with Marie on the toys front, unless it's furry Jet has no interest at all and even the furry ones stop being appealing after a bit even though i take them away from him to "recharge" them. A word of warning though, don't trow toys for her to catch, especially not very far, because if she's like Jet you'll have to go after them and fetch them yourself!

With the free running, i would just let her do what she is comfortable with - Jets like that on his long lead, he won't go away from us and just walks alongside but he's now getting a bit more daring and i guess as she gets more settled in and secure she may go off and play a bit more. Also I think it depends if there are other dogs to play with - jet was a different dog when there were other greyhounds to run after.

I too think the muzzle depends really on how Misty behaves so you could perhaps put it on to start with and if you think she's behaving well then take it off.

Talk to Viv about these things when you visit her, she'll be able to give you some good advice on the best way forward!

Michelle

You're doing very well so quickly!
I agree with you on the raw food diet - lots of people like to moan at you about it but after trial and error, it really has suited my two. Coats nice and soft and shiny, they're content and good solid poos!!
Tigerlily really wasn't interested in toys either. Unless it squeaked in which case she tore it to bits. A year on and she's only just learned how to play properly and at length. It just takes time and watching other dogs.
Running in the park will take time as well. Tigerlily isn't particularly interested either unless she decides to take off after Indiana. She'll do that briefly but prefers sniffing about. Other dogs running about will encourage her.
I keep the muzzles on when off-lead. I didn't think Indiana needed it but he surprised me when he caught a pigeon and wouldn't let me near him for two hours while he devoured every last morsel. Tigerlily has too high a prey-drive to even consider not being muzzled. As Marie said, probably better to err on the side of caution until you know her better.
As for the photos, I followed the instructions on here (slowly!) and it did work.
Hope to see photos soon! smile.gif

Misty sounds fab, you seem to be having a good time with her. Bess has no interest in toys of any sort, Bella will steal them and bury them in the garden (it's a possession thing) Cara has her own special toys, the Donkey with most of it's legs missing and a wee fluffy squeeky dog I got for the puppies. When I gave the pups the wee dog, they loved it, so did Caraevileye All Caras old toys were deposited with the pups (not the one legged donkey) and the wee squeeky dog was nickedhmm I tried putting the wee dog back with the pups, but Cara just whinged and stole it back at the first chance. Cara has hidden the wee dog and only brings it out to play with it for a while, then hides it again. So much for a mothers love for her babiesweirdface

I think I've managed to do the photos!

Misty at the dog home. She was in for a fortnight after we booked her so we often went down to walk her. Lovely blue piece of rope they gave us to walk her with on the second time!

Sister Misty of the Immaculate Canines in her beautiful GAL coat. Or Snood Doggy Dogg as she is sometimes known

One man and his dog. Normally cuddles like this are reserved for me but Mr Mac was bestowed with one the other night.

Sorry - can't work out how to make this one bigger! Misty enjoying a tide coming in at Croy beach

I've titled this 'Wake up, Dad! It must be time to eat again!'. You can see her baldy back end - some nice downy brown regrowth coming in there now.

Misty doesn't love the camera but I'll sneak a few more when I can! Thanks for all your support and advice - think we've decided to muzzle for a while just till we establish how she is. If it's a choice between keeping her on the lead and muzzling her but letting her run free, I think the latter is the lesser of two evils!

So beautifull. Although the on the bed shot looks like my house, different man, dog bedding...same expressions on both, him, sleepy and a bit long suffering, and her, well cozy and happy.

Cool
