Hello from a complete newbie!

Hi Everyone,

I've been skulking around the shadows of the forum and GAL site for a few weeks now and I've been told it's about time I came into the light, so here goes...
My name is Malc and I live in Aberdeen. I've never had any kind of pet, but have always loved dogs, but only now have a house I think would be suitable. I am ashamed to say I always thought when I eventually got a dog it would be a german shepherd (I am hanging my head in shame and hope that I'll be forgiven).

About 3 weeks ago, for the first time in my life, I was introduced to a lurcher. That was it, my life was turned upside down! A few short weeks later I find myself looking forward to the day I adopt. Days are taken up working out how to fence the back garden (it's a good job I'm in a room of my own at work!), evenings reading about all the dogs past and present that GAL have helped. There doesn't appear to be a cure, just this support group (c'mon, you all know GAL stands for Greyhoundowner Anonymously Lurking).

I think I should also say at this point what a fantastic site this is, it's so clearly laid out and information so easy to access. I think it is a real credit to GAL and congratulate whoever runs it. The postings on the forum about everyone's dogs are so interesting that I feel I know so many of the dogs already and the support you offer each other is pretty amazing.

Things I have learned over the past few weeks:
1. Give up any thoughts of having the couch to myself, it'll never happen so I might as well give in now;
2. Give up any thoughts of the duvet in the spare bedroom remaining undisturbed (one short visit taught me that);
3. Give up thinking I can resist and go ahead so that I can adopt soon.

Anyone got any advice for me?
Malc

Yes absolutely, and it's a biggy

Give up thinking that you will stop at just one...

Once you have one of these laid back, funny, athletic and affectionate beastie's in your life you will become hooked. And if you get the chance, wait 'til you see them run.

Good Luck....

Jacks
xx

Hiya Malc, welcome to the forum (at last!!) handshake.gif

Does this mean you can now cancel your membership to skulkers anonymous? biggrin.gif

I think the only advice i would give at this time would be to get to the timber merchants ASAP! biggrin.gif

Welcome to the forum, Malc - and I'm delighted you've stopped lurking in the shadows!

Two lurchers own me - Vegas and Dixie - and I'd love to have more but just don't have room. Looking forward to hearing more about you and of course your new friend when you get him or her. Please keep us posted on how you get on.

Christine

Hi Malc, welcome to the forum.
My only bit of advice is get an adoption form filled in A.S.A.P, if you haven't already that is he he. Keep us all posted on how you get on.
Never mind fancy scatter cushions a greyhound/lurcher is the best couch/duvet ornament you could wish for :)

Good luck.

Hi Folks,
Just a quick word from me to say thanks for all the welcoming messages. I've been invited down to Glasgow the weekend of the next walk, so I'll come along and meet you all. I'll be easy to spot - apart from the Aberdonian accent I'll be the one that's so excited to see all the dogs I've been reading about I'll probably have to be on a collar and lead myself!

Hope you have fun in Glasgow, as someone who worked in Aberdeen for a number of years a word of advice - no-one know what a quine or loon is and if you describe a dog as 'bonny', they may look at you strange. biggrin.gif

Hi, Welcome. Look forward to meeting you at the walk. You will enjoy meeting the dogs and no doubt someone will have a spare dog you can walk too. As an ex-Aberdonian I might allow you to call me a 'wifie' !! LOLbiggrin.gif

Nice to know your out the sulk bin, Hope to see you at some of the walks or events. Hounds are the best, ask any fencing supplier or furniture restorerevileye It's best to start with one hound, but not easy to stick with just onebiggrin
