Apparently this is what the vet thinks Jet has. His nails began, well basically falling off so off he went to the vets on wednesday to be sedated and then they looked at his nails. We had only booked him in to be sedated due to him hating the vets but it was fortunate as it meant they could clean up his feet and take nail and skin samples.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone else has known a greyhound with this condition and how they got on? I also wondered how well they can do without their nails as i'm not sure that Jets will grow back although I need to check this properly with the vet.

Tigerlily has had two nails falling out - both from her back paws. The vet has never given it any name though! What looks like a nail grows back in but falls out again. The vet says its not an actual nail that is growing in. She occasionally limps for an hour after whatever it is has just fallen out again but other than that there seems to be no adverse effects. Hope Jet is okay x

Thanks everyone, i just googled it (I don't know why I didn't think of doing that, duh) and i found some stuff on it.

He has been given omega 4 & 6 supplements and tablets from the vet and they say that if that doesn't do the job they will put him on steroids (which i don't much like the sound of - poor Jet). He seems to be bright and happy enough, was chasing rabbits yesterday! so I'm not too worried about him and the vet was reassuring that although he might sometimes be in a bit of discomfort in general he would be fine so hopefully it's not a very serious condition and just more of an annoyance to Jet.

Dave and Liz Aitchison of team Brindle fame have the same problem with their girl Lara she loses her nails on a regular basis she is crippled with corns sometimes so she now wears therapaw boots with little kiddies socks and these make a real difference,I have the three of them here just now and I see Laras nails are looking a bit iffy, put her boots on to go walkies and she's great.

oh bless I saw dog boots when in the Lake district and had thought of them for stoney beaches. Red hates none sandy beaches. Didn't buy tho thought may get laughed at and maybe I was being a bit daft. Know I should have bought them and hang everyone else.

Ahh, they would be great for Jet as his little toes keep bleeding when we go out. I'll have a look!

Jet won't be alone in the Links with boots, we've recently met a young groo boy called Jackson who wears boots because he gets off in the field area (beside the pavilion) and there is always a risk of glass. He looks utterly unashamed in them and they might be the answer for Jet's poor paws.

spoke to my daughter today and she says that there has been some research done and that some dogs with the condition have been helped with zinc derm. This is available from the vet. She says do not use human zinc as doses would be wrong and this could lead to real problems with copper etc. She has seen some dogs much better on the zinc derm but others it made no difference. Sorry no idea how much it is but may be worth asking about it with your vets... Hope that helps. (daughter qualified vet nurse)

Thanks for that Tandemsandy, We go back to the vets next Friday so i'll ask him about the Zinc the, the vets seem to be very good so they should know what i'm on about!.

I'm going to see if I can find the boots but he won't be gracing the links with them cause we've moved!!! He's now terrorizing the bunnies on Blackford hill instead (alongwith the doggies/dogowners etc).
