Can anyone advise me about groos and their sunbathing habits. I worry because last summer I would sit in my garden and Mason would lie out, despite panting heavily and clearly being too hot, with no apparent ability to decide 'its too hot I'm going to find shade'.
We had a very warm sunny day today and he's come back from daycare exhausted, I suspect because he's sunbathed all day with no intervention.
Can I rely on him to have the common sense to seek shade when he is too hot? Or does that need to be monitored?

Cas is so silly when out in the sun, while all my other dogs lie in the small plastic pool or lie under the trampoline to get shade she just stands in the middle of the paddock panting. I resort to putting a wet towel on her to try and cool her down but more times than not I have to take her indoors where it is cooler. Sorry I know this does not help but you may have to say to the folks at day care to keep an eye on him as they can dehydrate so quicky. aww Nora

When I encourage Amber to have a drink on a hot day, or to take a drink from a clean water source when out walking, my husband looks at me as if I was daft ( no comment here please! ), and says, "Joyce if she wanted a drink she would take one!"

Different if a dog is locked in a car and has no say in the amount of heat, but maybe my OH is right and if Mason was too hot he would move!

My dad when he was a kid had a mongrel dog and he says it used to lie so close to the fire you would smell its fur being singed (if thats how you spell it) the dog would appraently just lie there and cry because it was too hot but not move. Needless to say a human had to intervene before anything disasterous happened!!

I spoke to the daycare today and they said Mason is a terrible sun worshipper. I pointed out how tired he had been on Friday (probably from dehydration) and they promised to intervene in future.
When he was dropped off tonight Sara said he was very good today and came in to the shade of his own accord when he got hot.
Apparently he doesn't like to drink out the water bowl after the other dogs have been in it. His new trick is to nudge Sara, then go and nudge the box where the water bottles are kept and continue going back and forward until she gets a fresh bottle out and pours him some, which he prefers to try and drink as its coming out the bottlesmile.gif
So tell me if he is smart enough to do that - how come he can't work out a basic thing like 'sun hot'biggrin.gif

I think you ought to write a book about all Mason's tricks, its bound to be a best seller - especially the quirky way you tell them, always makes me laugh.
