SCRUFFY

Hi Folks, I have some really sad news today about a GAL rescue dog called Scruffy, for those of you who don't know his background here's his story as published on the GAL Blog at the end of October last year....

This is GAL's latest arrival, his new foster mum has called him SCRUFFY, you can see why! Last Sunday (24th October) GAL received an urgent phone call from a vets. They had picked up a Lurcher with an unusual and terribly sad story. The dog had been spotted roaming round the local area for over 6 weeks, it was known by the local residents that the dogs owners, on discovering their dog had a broken leg, had simply abandoned him. Many attempts were made to catch the dog and finally on Sunday the local vet with the aid of some friends managed to catch him. The dog was taken into the vets surgery and immediately examined. The dogs leg was indeed VERY badly broken and needed to be amputated immediately. This is where GAL comes in, the vet needed paid for the very expensive operation then needed to find a home where the dog could recuperate. As far as GAL was concerned the money was not a problem, finding a foster home at such short notice was, however, after a number of frantic calls a great foster home was found for him. The dogs leg was amputated successfully that day and the dog went to his new foster home the next day where he was quickly renamed SCRUFFY. As you can see by his picture SCRUFFY is a strange looking character, after being a stray for so long he is very underweight and his coat is in a pretty bad condition. SCRUFFY is also a VERY nervous boy and is only now, after 4 days in his new home, beginning to allow his foster parent to gently touch and stroke him. SCRUFFY was taken to the vets today for a check up, he's recovering well from his operation however some bad news was awaiting him. On examining x-rays of his leg prior to amputation a large mass within the leg was identified as the cause of the leg break. Following tests on this mass it has been diagnosed as an osteosarcoma. In laymans terms this is a very aggressive cancer which had grown from the inside of the leg and forced the bone to splinter and break. This type of cancer is virulent and fatal with the usual life span after diagnosis being 6 months, as SCRUFFY had been roaming free for at least 6 weeks the cancer will have spread to the rest of his body. After being contacted by the vet who caught SCRUFFY the police and the SSPCA are now launching criminal charges against SCRUFFY'S old owners. I'll leave you with the last line of an email I received earlier from SCRUFFY'S foster mum - ''I shall give him all the love he wants and more and hope that his last weeks or months are a lot happier than he has obviously been in a long time if ever''

Sadly Scruffy had to be PTS this morning, his health had deteriorated dramatically over the last few days and this morning Scruffy couldn't walk. We suspect he finally succumbed to the Cancer, we're all devastated by this but know his last few months were very happy ones. Our thoughts are with Mione who did such a great job looking after Scruffy in his final months.

Poor Scruffy his story had me in tears. Thankfully his last few months were filled with love. I don't know how his previous owners sleep at night.

I am really sad to hear of Scruffy's passing today, and I am glad that he found love in the end.

I, like everyone else I'm sure, had a wee tear in my eye when I first heard his story.  It warmed my heart though, to hear that he had found a foster mum who would care of him so well. I think she is a really brave and unselfish lady to have done this, knowing that in the end, she would only face sadness herself.  I take my hat off to her.

I am sorry to hear about Scruffy, but I must say it was a joy to see him at the Xmas Fair - he looked confident, happy and loved, thanks to the lovely lady who took him under her wing for his last few months and gave him what he deserved.  She is also to be admired as an owner of a few 'tripod' dogs.

Hi all

Really sad about Scruffy - but in his last few weeks he's been getting the care and love he should have been getting all along. I really admire Mione and all she's done for him and I know how upset she'll be, even knowing from the outset that Scruffy's time would be short.

I had the privilege of meeting Scruffy, Mione and her dogs at the Xmas Fair and he allowed me to stroke him, although he wouldn't take a treat. He'll be at peace now, the wee soul.

Hope the previous owners get everything they deserve for this!

Christine

Poor, Poor Scruffy. At least he's in no more pain. And he got lots of love and care before the end.

I hope his owners are severly dealt with for their cruelty.

Hi Folks, thanks for all the kind words about Scruffy, I've just received a new picture of him taken a few days before he passed away, I really can't beleive this is the same dog, Mione did such a great job with him. The little Brindle girl in the picture is Kizzy, Scruffy's girlfriend!

What a marvellous picture, Dave! And as you say, Scruffy looks like a different dog. He certainly did the day I met him at the Xmas Fair - I didn't recognise him from his first photo at all. It just goes to show what 2 or 3 weeks of good food, shelter and lots of tlc can do! It's just a pity he didn't have longer to enjoy it. I know that Mione will be missing him - and Kizzy too. She's sweet!

Mione has written a nice article for the newsletter about her time with Scruffy but I hope she won't mind me posting some extra information here.

"I  received the results of Scruffys P.M.  today and the poor wee soul was SO unlucky . He didn't just have the osteosarcoma to contend with he had ANOTHER type of cancer as well .He was suffering from haemangio sarcoma in muscle in his abdomen . Normally this manifests itself in the spleen .   This is SO unusual apparently and my vet originally said he would be a very unlucky dog to have two different cancers and he therefore thought the ' lump ' was probably a torn muscle because it was full of blood . It wasn't ....so the poor boy was trying to fight that one as well "

I'm so glad that Scruffy went to exactly the right place and spent his last few months knowing love and happiness with Mione and her pack. She turned his life around. Thanks Mione.
