Dog Re-call

We have trained our two dogs to come to a whistle in the house, it also works really well outside for my partner who has a really loud whistle and can whistle loudly on demand, for myself however sometimes I whistle really loudly sometimes not so loud and more often than not, not at all!!!  I was reading in another post that they use a Shepards Whisltle, I would be interested to know where I could get one and retrain them in the house to that or even one of the silent whistles that only dogs can hear but I'm not so sure about how to use that, I would appreciate some advice!!!!::

Hi

We have trained Blue to come to a sheep dog whistle with great sucess.

We tried one of those silent whistles but it didn't have any effect on him

We started by training him in the back garden. Blew the whistle and when he came back gave him a treat. Now when we are out he runs back so fast when the whistle is blown he has knocked me off my feet on more than 1 occasion!

We got our first whistle from a local outward bounds store at the huge expense of 2 pounds it was just the cheap plastic one but good to practice as it takes a little while to get the knack.

We have now purchased a metal whistle. We got our new ones from ISDS.org.uk. Good prices and were quite quick to deliver.

Hope this is of some use.

Let me know how you get on or get in touch if you have any more questions

Amanda

For anyone wanting to learn how to use a sheep-dog whistle, here's the trick.

Put the whistle in your mouth, lanyard attatchment bit (where you attach a shoelace) down, hold this bit so that the curved bit of the whistle follows the curve of your mouth.

Rest the tip of your tongue on top of the whistle and blow. You change pitch by moving your tongue further or less onto the whistle.

Learn away from others, you'll either cover them with spit or deafen them whilst you're learning.

After a couple of days you'll br just like one man and his dog, "come by" (go round the flock to the left) is three short whistles and so on.

Phil

P.S. If anyone know's the standard call for "Oi, gerrof that squirrel", please let us know.
