Sally's nails
Permalink Closed

Hi, one of my own dogs, a brindle girl aged 9yrs called Sally is having problems with her toe nails. She has lost 3 nails in the space of a fortnight and has had them cloiterised by the vet to give them a chance to grow. They didnt split or crack as with fungal infections.

Has anybody's dog out there had similar problems? I would love to hear about them.

Esther,

Luca split one of his nails really badly recently and had to have it chopped by the vet and then sealed.  I don't know if this would work in your situation, but my vet advisd me to file Luca's nails, much like you would your own.  He said that doing this helps to avoid them catching on ragged things and tearing, and that it would help the nail that he had cut away to grow back properly.

I thought that this was quite strange at first, but I got a big emery board and Luca will sit quite happily while he is having his manacure.  I haven't had any problems with his nail growing back.

It's probably not the solution to your problem, but it might help Sally as her nails are growing.

Hi Esther,

I'm sorry to hear that.  I'll keep my fingers (and toes) crossed in the hope that everything turns out ok.

Hi, Ive just had Sally's results back from the vet. Michael says that it is not a fungal infection. The lab told him that they could do a blood test but still might not find out whats going on and ... wait till you hear this.. they could amputate her toe and do tests on it. Michael (vet) said thats a bit drastic and I said no flippin way. In the end we still dont know whats causing it, it could be genetic or her immune system attacking. She will have a course of steriods injections to help. All in all, no more nails are looking like falling off so heres hoping it all settles down..

just back from the vet with sally and they reckon all of her nails will fall off at some point. She will be kept on steroids and anti biotics plus vitamin A with zinc. i am also going to look for vitamin E oil as stated on the web. She is such a brave girl. Vet reckons its all down to genetics and her racing days wouldnt have helped either.

Hi Esther

Did the vet say if Sally's nails would grow back? What a shame if she loses all her nails, but hope she doesn't. We'll keep everything crossed. Don't know if it would work for dogs but gelatin is supposed to be good for human nails. Maybe a cube of jelly now and then would help if she would eat it. Let us know how she gets on.

Hi Christine, yes her nails should grow back in but it takes months. At the moment there are 3 hanging off. Not nice.

Sally is getting boots to help her to walk better. I feel she is losing weight and drinking loads. I take it that the steroids do this. Spoke to a girl who had put in a bit in Our Dog mag. Her rottie has the same problem.

Give Sally a big hug from Paul and I - here's hoping the weight loss is very fixable.

Esther - I know how worried you are about Sally. Hopefully once her food intake has increased and she's been well wormed you'll see a difference. How are her nails - are they any better? Maybe the time of year plus her ailment has something to do with her lack of condition. Some of the other threads are mentioning problems with greasy/dry coats, dandruff, etc.

It's good news, though, that her blood tests came back with nothing wrong. Hope your wee lass gets better soon! Let us know how she gets on.
