Greyhounds Swimming
Permalink Closed

Hi everyone

Does anyone have a greyhound or lurcher who swims? Vegas just hates being out of his depth in water. He stands in deep water well over his chest and he'll lie down in shallow water or run around and splash in it, but I've never seen him swim except in a kinda panicky Scooby-doo way when he's accidentally plunged into water too deep for him to stand in. I've read a couple of threads on the forum mentioning their dogs lying down in shallow water, but never swimming. I just wondered if no swimming is a Vegas-thing or greyhoundy/lurchery thing.

Zelda, our greyhound, swam once but only because she waded out of her depth in the river. She followed another doggie friend in too far and then wondered what on earth to do. So she stood on the platform bases which support the bridge half way across the river and looked at me as if begging for me to rescue her . She stood there hoping for help for at least 15 minutes while a small audience collected at the riverside all trying to coax her back. Eventually she awkwardly swam to the edge but has never gone into deep water again. I will say it was the funniest doggie paddle I have ever witnessed.....these lanky legs just don't do it!!!

Blue went for his one and only swim (that we've seen) at the beach last September. Lovely warm day, and he wanted to play with a terrier who was fetching sticks out of the sea. He was quite good. But shivered uncontrolably all the way home.

Maybe greyhounds just aren't built for swimming like you say, Evelyn, and avoid it unless it's absolutely necessary. Lurchers with their mixed parentage and the ones with thicker coats I thought would be well up for a deeper dip.

It's a shame Blue was put off his swim by being so cold afterwards. It must have been like us having a dip in the sea without having a towel to dry off. If we have the car with us we've always got a couple of old clean sheets or towels in the boot to rub Vegas down with. He can't pass a muddy pond or puddle, ditch or boggy area without having a good wallow in it. The smellier the better! I think there must be hippo somewhere in his background.

Zelda is just the same Christine. Although she has never ventured deeper than her knees since the swimming incident, she loves to cool off in the shallows of the sea, a river in low tide, a stream or even a puddle in the grass. Pure bliss is written all over her face....however one mention of 'bath' and she's off!!
