New Greyhound Stadium
Permalink Closed

Hi

I found this in the Herrald & Post.

Work is finally set to get underway on a £9 million greyhound stadium in the lothians after nearly three years of delays. The eight lane race track which promises to be among the top greyhound venues in the UK was originally due for completion in 2003.

Opposition from animal rights activists held up construction on farmland near the villiage of Wallyford in East Lothian.

Now the planning committe at East Lothian Council have given the project the go-ahead with builders expected to be on site by June.

Councilors said they were "satisfied" that excellent facilities would be provided for the dogs.

Activists have pledged to continue their protests against the facility in the hope of persuading racegoers to stay away.

The stadium is expected to have seating for nearly 2000 people and terracing for 3000 more in a three-tier grandstand, which is costing £6 million to build. It is understood to include centrally heated air conditioned kennels for up to 126 dogs and will be the largest in Britain. Three floors of bars a restaurant, hospitality suites, food outlets and a disco are to be incorporated in the site.

However Amanda Wells chair of Greyhound Action Scotland said the group would keep up its campaign against the facility.

Does this mean GAL will be busier than ever???  I truly hope not. What are everyones views??

Hi Suzanne, from my sources I can tell you that they are hoping to have the stadium up and running by September this year, a lot of the groundwork has already been done on the stadium and the planning permission detailed in the newspaper is actually for the houses that go along with the development.

As the track will be run under NGRC rules that basically means the RGT will be given bucket loads of cash to rehome the dogs that race there, that said we will inevitably be a bit busier as the RGT can't rehome all the dogs that come out of there, again however it's going to be a big popular track and there will no doubt be a lot of trainers bringing their dogs up from England to race, bottom line is we'll just have to suck it and see...

There was more stuff from Greyhouns Action Scotland in yesterday's East Lothian Courier - they were statin gagain that this will be a travesty for greyhounds bieng dumped in the Lothians. They are to continue campaigning against it.

They said that they could get no info from the Council or developers on the animal aftercare programmes.

It'll be a story that will run and run - (sorry about the pun!)

Think we may see a few more greys down our area!

Also in the East Lothian courier was a story about worries over traffic increases in the local area. Some absolute tw@t of a bloke - sorry can't remember his name, possibly Wallace, but he was Chairman of something that the story didn't make clear - said "I don't know where this business of dumping them comes from" in relation to the likelihood of more unwanted greys. Then went on to say "I used to have one and it never made me any money."
