Freddy (and to some extent, Wilma) has the most awful bad breath. I've checked his teeth and they are ok. We actually had them "professionally" cleaned about 18 months ago and it made no difference to him! We've bought bones for him to chew - smoked and unsmoked, but he doesn't really show a lot of interest. I don't soak his food, but he really does inhale it. Without exaggeration, he can consume a 250g bowl of food in 23 seconds! (Is this a record? .... Sorry, that's a different posting!!!!!!).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can make him smell a bit sweeter? Sometimes it seems as though the smell is coming from his mouth, at other times it seems to come through his coat. Does anyone know of a natural breath freshener - we've tried garlic and natural yoghurt but it doesn't make any difference. I wondered if I should get some of that colloidal silver that Denise mentioned.
I love my big boy to bits, but sometimes you really don't want to cuddle him for too long! I know dogs are supposed to have "dog breath" but this is taking it a bit too far!!
Any advice would be appreciated!
Sharon

I`d prob use three sprigs (decent sized sprigs) of Parsley (chopped up finely to hide it!) every mealtime. Try it for a week - you should notice a big difference. Let me know how he gets on. It worked for my sisters Bernese Mountain Dog X pony! Parsley is also a good source of iron and will do him no harm.
OK, so we've been using the Parlsey for just under a week now - morning and night. I have to admit there is a difference in Freddy's smell! He's much nicer smelling - you don't mind having him up close and personal!! He initially didn't like it - you could almost see him picking the little bits of green out of his dinner. How did I get round this? When his dinner was done, I put about a tablespoon of milk in his bowl and swished it about. he was so keen to lap up the milk he took in the parsley at the same time !
I did have a wee giggle to myself as I chopped the herbs for his dinner last night - "my dog simply has to have fresh herbs with his dinner"!!!!! !!!
Will keep you updated on the long term progress of this!! Do you think he will need parsley for the rest of his life, or do you think I should be able to reduce the amount and still not have the smell?!!

We are going to try parsley with Bruce. His breath was a bit pongy when he arrived last week, although it could be all the panting he was doing getting used to living with us. It seems to be a bit better since he stopped doing this. Will let you know how this goes.
Glad it seems to be working for Freddy. My sister says every day for 2 weeks then every other day! It`s a long term thing but can be stopped and started as you like. Parsley is high in Vitamin C and iron so worth feeding it anyway. She says must be fresh parsley, only the best for Freddy
