Andie's arthritis in his foot is really playing up at the moment. He's taking his full whack of Metacam along with Glucosamine and he wears a magnetic collar.
Anyone else got any ideas as to help him before I go down the pharmaceutical route? He's also on his heart medication so I'm trying to steer clear of too many drugs but I can't see him suffer.
He still loves his walk but he hobbles as soon as you hit hard paths or roads. Its easy enough up here to find a grassy expanse for him to sniff at and he seems to manage fine on the soft ground.
I remember that when I was a young girl, my dad would give our old GSD cod liver oil capsules. I don't know how effective this would be with arthritis but it certainly did help to keep our dog a bit more limber. Apparently it has the same effects on dogs' joints as it does in humans. He used to give her 1 capsule every day along with her dinner.
You might need to check with Dave, Carole or even Suzanne (our resident vet's nurse) that it is ok to give it to greys.
Have you checked each of his pads on the foot he hobbles on. Our old dog, Reilly, hobbles in the same circumstances and initially we thought he had arthritis. Then we discovered a corn (the first of 6 he has developed at various times). Although the corns are very small, usually about as big as a pinhead, they can be very, very painful. I don't think cod liver oil capsules will do him any harm, probably give him a nice shiny coat as well as helping his joints - I have seen an ad somewhere for capsules specifically for dogs - why not do a quick search on the internet.
Natural cod liver oil is highly recommended by veterinarians for its high vitamin A and vitamin D content per teaspoon and for the Omega-3 essential fatty acids availability to your pets.
Vitamin A is essential for a healthy immune system. Vitamin A also helps maintain healthy mucous membranes in the eyes and ears. It is also essential for proper operation of the gastro-intestinal tract and urogenital tract.
Vitamin D is necessary for your pet to properly metabolize calcium for healthy bones.
It also provides essential fatty acids for proper growth, reproduction, healthy skin and coat. Cod Liver oil is naturally high in omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which help reduce inflammation, particularly joint and skin inflammation. EPA and DHA are also key for maintaining a healthy heart.
BUT I WOULD CONSULT YOUR VET BEFORE TRYING ANY SORT OF SUPPLEMENTS...

Well I'll be blowed...I've had a right good look at the foot as you suggested, Carole....and its a bloomin great corn, just as you said. We and the vet assumed that his arthritis was worse as he has been affected by arthritis in this paw before following a toe dislocation and fracture of the same toe in the space of a fortnight. Any idea how the vet will treat the corn?
I feel bad that I didn't spot it before now. Poor Andie.
