Just wondering how we can train Harry out of pulling whilst on lead? He's okay(ish) if kept on a very short leash but otherwise he tends to pull. Obviously we don't want to be yanking him back by the neck all the time.
Any hints, tips, tried and tested methods?
Fiona
ps: we've ordered a harness, which should be here very soon.
OK, hopefully I remember Viv's advice!...If Harry pulls let him go to the end of the lead then you stop walking, and keep stopped till he figures out this aint too clever and comes back to you at which point he gets a nice treat and the walk continues...repeat this each and everytime he pulls, the idea is that he loves his walks which is why he's pulling, obviously you stopped spoils the walk, he'll get the idea fairly quickly that to enjoy his walk he needs to walk by your side and not up front.... Remember, let him figure this out himself and have some nice hot dogs in your pocket to reward him when he comes back..
Harry did that with me when I took him out for a walk. But I had to stop when he pulled me as it hurt my hands (I had both my hands operated on last year and the result wasn't too good), but Harry always stopped with me. So Daves' advice should work on the big fella.
He's much better, thanks. He still pulls when he gets excited - he was doing it a lot on the walk on Sunday - but suppose that's only to be expected. with so many dogs around. Pearly is usually good as gold on lead but even she was pulling like a good un as well!
We think he just needed to settle nicely with us - no doubt it'll all fall into place. Bless him!
