And he's off!!!!

Today was a big day for Harry. It was.... wait for it.... his first time off-lead with us!!! Drum roll, please.....

Steve and I got up at the crack of dawn to take Harry and Pearly to the secure field near our house. On went the muzzle, and off went Harry! Or, rather, he didn't - he bimbled about for a few steps, rubbed his face on the ground cos he doesn't like the muzzle (too bad, he'll have to get used to it!), then did a few kangaroo-type happy bounds after Steve. Pearly was still on the lead at the moment and very excited. For some time, Harry showed no signs of doing anything other than staying close to Steve so we let Pearly off. That was then a different story! They had a right good run around together! It's a good job Harry was muzzled as he's a buggah for doing the old nipping thing. Pearly did a tremendous amount of growling, which is something she doesn't normally do when running, so she obviously isn't scared to give him what-for!

They both seemed to really enjoy themselves, which is great. Pearly is much, much more agile than Harry so she easily out-jinked him. Even from where I was standing I could see the "where did she go?" look on his face! He's bigger and stronger so covers more ground in each stride, but I would say that she has better acceleration. Pearly came away with a scratch on the back of her left hind leg, most likely from Harry's claws (not intentional) but otherwise both were unscathed. Nowt that a wee dod of diluted Dettol and a blob of magic Arnica won't sort out.

All in all, it was a very successful first outing for Hazza-Wazza. I know it seems early to be letting him off but right from day one we've been training him to come to the whistle with the high-value incentive of cooked chicken. Worked a treat! At one point they were both over at the far end of the field having a sniff about. Steve gave two sharps blows on his whistle and they came racing back, tails a-wagging. Bless them!

Dontcha just love these doggies?

Fiona

ps: the only bummer is that Steve is off work today and I aint. Bah.

Sim and Suzie play like that in our garden - whizzing around and growling and 'wuffing' at each other.  Prior to Suzie's arrival Sim had hardly uttered a sound - seems to be all part of the game.

Mine seldom come in unscathed though - almost always a cut somewhere on at least one foot.  It doesn't seem to bother them though and it's never anything serious.

It is GREAT to see them hurtling around and really enjoying themselves.

How strange, that just sounds like our 2, Dinah is the more agile one & can nip in & out of Noah she can turn much sharper than he can & he seems to take the long way round before catching up, but when he does he has a bark & try's for a nip (not a nasty one) but she turns on him with the top lip up & a wee growl, he is soon put in his place
