Sunny and Stairs
Permalink Closed

Wonder if anyone can give me some advice. As you come in our door we have internal stairs to take us up to our house, we (well adam!!) has been lifting sunny when taking him out to the garden to do the toilet. However i finish work at 4 and adam doesn't finish till 6. Shera gets out about 4.30 but can't take Sunny out because i can't lift him down the stairs. The past two days he has done the toilet in the house  at 5 because he can't hold it in any longer!. He is really good in the house and wouldn't do the toilet unless he is completley bursting. Would it hurt his leg if we tried to get him to walk down/up the stairs?? wouldn't want to do anything that might hurt his leg but don't want him to get confused because iam not taking him out. Hope that makes sense!!!

Hi Nina - well done with Sunny - he looks gorgeous.

I am not the expert, and I am sure Carole Robinson will give you some good advice, but I suspect he would rather try and go outside.  How many stairs are there?  He may be able to get down them on three legs, especially as he gets more used to having one leg out of action.

I think I'd be inclined to very carefully try him with the stairs and see how he gets on.

Meantime - give Carole a call - or email her direct on: carole@gal.org.uk - she will know what's best.

Good luck!

hi Nina, I have Legion who is recovering from a smashed kneecap and had pins in his leg as well. I think he will hold his leg up if you try him as it is probably too sore to take any weight at all. I would let him try to go outside and just be there holding his collar to see how he manages.

Nina,

I put a coat on Sunny and used the coat to help lift/support him, he's so heavy, I couldn't manage him on my own either.  He wasn't to sure at first, but soon got the idea. If he needed a rest, I helped him by taking some of the weight off his back end, by gently lifting him by the coat.

I had mastered the art with old Kaz when he took his stroke, but then Kaz only weighed 29kgs!

Good luck

Maybe one of your kindly neighbours could help!
