with summer fast appraoching, heres what to do if yer dog gets on the wrong end of a bee or wasp...
Remove the stinger with tweezers. Or scrape out the stinger, moving parallel to the skin surface, to reduce the chance of it pumping more venom into the dog's skin.
* Bathe the stung area with a solution of baking soda (bicarbonate) and water for BEE stings
* Bathe the stung area with a solution of white vinegar for WASP stings
Immediately apply ice packs to reduce swelling (lining the pack with cloth or a thin towel). Do this frequently for 5 minutes at a time.
If your dog starts having any sort of reaction like severe swelling, disorientation, vomitting, trouble breathing or moving - get them to a vet asap (call in advance so they can be ready & waiting for you!)
Even if your pet seems fine after being stung, monitor them for 24hrs to ensure no delayed reactions.
fingers crossed no-one eats any......not so easy if stung in the throat - would advise to call your vets on this matter if it happens....
I remember it by: Bicarbonate for Bees
Vinegar for Vasps :)

They say owners look like their dogs...Im still waiting to morph into a super fit, lean machine with legs up to my armpits...
As Sascha has had 2 "allergic" episodes (in my vet's opinion from insect bites/stings) we have been told to keep 4mg (I think that's the dose as I am at work at the moment & the box is in the house but it's the strength for humans too) tablets of Piriton in the house to give her should she start swelling up.
She looked really strange when it happened as she had bumps all over her body under her fur & her nose looked as if it was broken because it had swollen on one side first.
We still have to phone the vet if it happens but it means that the antihistamine can get to work faster for her.
It's great to know I can use Piriton on Vegas should he have a bad reaction to a sting or bite. I used to use Piriton for hay fever and it was effective, but not as good as the course of injections I used to get in January/February for the complaint.
Thanks for letting me know we can use Piriton on dogs too.
