Keeping your cool

PHEW! OK, I know it's Scotland and 2 days of extremely hot weather probably means it'll snow tomorrow but if it doesn't I wondered if anyone had any 'top tips' on how to keep the hounds cool. Our pack have been flat out on their backs the last 2 days, tongues hanging daintily out of their mouths and drooling every so often.

OK, my tip is a damp towel, we give ours a good rub down with one every few hours and the ones that don't complain too much get the towel draped over them then doused in cold water from a hose. We also give them the choice of their beds indoors or their duvets outside but in a nice shady area..

Anyone else got some top tips?...

Blue has been really suffering with the heat. I have made him a cool down jacket out of chamois leather - soaked with water and put on Blue (has velcro straps so doesn't come off) it keeps him cool as the leather stays wet for quite a while.

Only probs is getting him off his bed to take it off him once he has cooled down!

we tried the wet t-towel but the kids weren't amused!  discovered they quite like having the fan on - it certainly stops them huffing.

We do the teatowel thing too. Only bummer is that Harry is into everything so despite the heat he's up and down like a yoyo, making sure that he's not missing out on anything interesting of the food variety whenever we leave the room. His new nickname is Noseybonk - remember the funny chap in the mask with the huge nose who used to be in the programme Jigsaw? Anyhoo.....

We also give them icecubes to keep cool. Pearly loves them but Harry isn't so sure. Though he does like ice-lollies. I think we has a bit of a sweet tooth.

Manda - your chamois jacket sounds wonderful. I must get Steve's mum to make a couple for H and P. Great idea!

Murf is suffering much more than Maisie at the mo with this heat - think coz he's black - he wont keep a wet tea towel on him for long enough so Ive found an endless top up of icecubes in their drinking water helps - they can crunch on them if they wish but it keeps the water freezing cold for a good hour at a time...hurry up rain!!!!

*phew*

We rushed out today to buy a fan. All the shops were sold out but John managed to find one hiding on a shelf! It seems to be proving a hit with the 2 pooches

Well this morning I got up early opened all the windows and shut all the curtains but only leaving a small gap and the whole house was at least a few degrees cooler than outside. The dogs definately were NOT panting as much today. Mind you today there has been a bit of a breeze.

All the dugs bumbed out in the front room upside down enjoying the coolness

Hi

I filled up a bucket with water  on Sunday to ensure the dogs had plenty to drink.

Does not look very aesthetic in my lounge  I used a nice black one from B&Q  - perhaps it give a 60' retro look.

What a great photo - Dave and Daisy are really enjoying sookin' their ice lollies! Probably need lots of them too, living way down south where it's usually far warmer than up here in the icy north. Daisy looks as if she's being ever so delicate licking her ice lolly, while Dave is wolfing his down!

We discovered on holiday that Eilidh has a 'thing' about drinking in public.  We usually carry a 2 litre bottle of water around with us but Eilidh would back off everytime it emerged.  I think she expected it to get flung over her.

It was really hard to get her to drink anything on outings as she preferred to wait until she got back to the cottage when she would do a very good impersonation of a sponge. So, our walks took us an extra long time as we had to stop every so often under big trees for shade, which wasn't too hard as we spent most of our holidays walking through forests!

We did discover one sure-fire way of helping her keep cool though.....ice-cream! She'll eat it out of a tub if you give her spoonfuls or she'll daintily lick it from a cone.  Every time she saw an ice-cream van or a kiosk, she would get a litt;e glint in her eye.

Come to think of it, maybe the water thing was just a trick so she could get more ice-cream!

dave.......thanks very much for posting the pic for me.

have tried both kids with ice cubes too - daisy isn't interested at all so i plopped the cubes into their water bowl - dave decided to retrieve it and he ended up with his nose well dunked trying to get at it - was very funny to see !

eilidh (how do you pronounce that?) seems to have got her way with the ice cream - well done, girly !

Eilidh (aka. Ailie) is of Germanic origin & is a Anglicized Scottish name meaning "noble"

A beautiful name indeed...

You can look up name meanings in my post on page 3 of News n Views entitled "Name that Hound"
