This is a quick version of events. Sat night arrive at my usual park see a guy with greyhounds coming towards me. I think great fellow hound owners. Let Benson and Ollie out and pop Erins lead on. Met with mouthfuls of abuse...hasten my dogs are nowhere near at this point having flew off on their well known route. Greyhound person telling me he will let his dogs rip mine apart and that I let my dogs out on purpose......I then asked him where he was going and what he wanted me to do. He appeared to have difficulty with comprehension and language so I called Benson and Ollie over and they sat beautifully beside me as these poor dogs were half strangled past me. More muttering from him and his woman in tow. I said at this point maybe a muzzle if they are so dangerous. Woman shouts if it was not for dog she was holding she would basically give me a slap. At this point I mentioned that I too had a greyhound and that if she required a muzzle she would be wearing one. More abuse and then i just hollered at them that it was people like them who gave greyhounds a bad name. They walked off and i stood for a bit. I did not feel safe enough to continue my walk as it is a bit off the beaten track so I got into the car and took their reg and reported them to the police.......guess what false plates.
However, after seeing Daves appeal and saying racing on at Armadale Sat night it all fits into place........cannot stop thinking about the poor dogs he has. Also it just takes someone like him and someone with kiddies and dogs for things to get totally out of hand. PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE TO SIT A TEST BEFORE THEY ARE ALLOWED DOGS.
Will wait for police to get back to me. They have told me to contact them immediatly if I see them again. It has put me off going to my favourite walking spot though.
On one hand I hope they come back so you can inform the police but on the other I hope they don't turn up again for your own safety.
What happened to decency and courtesy..... It all seems to have disappeared in recent years or am I just getting old ?
Certainly I meet more rude and obnoxious people (except at GAL) these days !!!
It really makes me mad that there are so many ignorant and careless dog owners out there.
I also noticed that I was dodging dog poo at the Gala ....I'd bet the culprets weren't greyhound owners or greyhounds for that matter, that didn't pick up the mess....
I've had a young man shout at me to feed my dog - duh its a greyhound its meant to be thin !!!
You just can't win against these idiots !!
Hope you recover from this ordeal & hope Ollie and Benson are OK too.
I know what you mean and I can sympathise with you. I have been known to vent my spleen on the forum myself. But honestly, what is WRONG with some people these days? Have people like this always been around? Maybe not as many of them as there are now.
Hope you're feeling better now, Susan, but I know these incidents always make me so mad, I think about them for days afterwards. The fact that the police are very interested in this couple is a plus. We can only hope that the police catch up with them and they have their dogs taken from them at some point. It's such a shame that they have dogs who would blossom under the care of GAL owners.
Hope the whole thing doesn't put you off walking Benson, Erin and Ollie where you normally enjoy your walks. But at least you know if you do see their car, or them again you can let the police know where they are.
Hi, Susan - what a horrible experience for you. They sound like right nasty pieces of work. You're right, it does give greyhound owners a bad name. I suppose we just have to keep all the good GAL-minded people at the front of our thoughts and not let @ssholes drag us down. Well done you for keeping your cool and reporting them to the police.
I have just read your article, sitting open-mouthed, at my computer on my lunch-break. I am so sorry to hear that two, indecent, thoughtless morons spoke to you in that manner and especially the way in which they "look" after their dogs.
Good on you reporting to the police - hopefully these rogues will be caught and suitably punished - poo-bag hurling contest at them, as targets (not sand, though).
Don't let an enjoyable walk with the hounds put you off. But you are right, you see people who share the same interests as you, i.e. greyhounds and you feel you share the same mentality and that they too will be as friendly and open - but WRONG - you do meet some abosulate disgraces.
We had 'trainer' who housed greyhounds near us. We too used to get the 'I will let my dogs rip yours apart if you don't stop letting them off in the LOCAL PARK' (cos it was for his personnal use mined). Or 'if I wasn't holding all these dogs I would be ripping you apart', needless to say he isn't around anymore (has he moved to where Susan is?!).
Yet there is a guy we know who also races greyhounds but his dogs never so much as growl at ours. Nicer owner, nicer dogs.
Thanks for the good wishes. It is now nearly a week since this happened and I went out walking on my own a couple of days ago to a different part of the park and it was fine. I really think it must have been someone going to the Armadale race. Ian has a cunning plan for tracking the car anyway!
I also have trouble believing what they came away with and the poor dogs. It does sound very much like the person neeroz used to encounter
