Most you will know Snap was at the vet on Monday for an operation to stitch up a bit tear on her jaw. The vet asked if she was lame in her right rear leg, as the muscle was noticibly smaller that the left leg.
Right enough the right rear leg muscle is smaller - I'm now worried that she may have arthritis in her hip joint. My previous lurcher type girl developed arthritis in her hip which led her over a period of a year to lose the use of her paw and then her leg. When the other leg wetn she was pts - but she was 12.
I'll get the vet to investgate next week.
Anyone had a dog who suffered muscle loss in one rear leg?
Thanks for the messages! Snap is lying on my bed while I have been working on the computer - She gets the lampshade collar off - when I'm there. Got to make sure though that she does not scratch her jaw stiched wound.
I have checked out her paw and her leg. manipulated in several directions without a flinch from her. I expect the vet will want to x ray the leg joints - as there are no outward signs of damage apart from the muscle size
She is getting special attention at moment - especially as she is the oldest of my dogs
What a couple of weeks you have had, what a shame for you and Snap. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Snap is going to be fine, it surely is a good sign that Snap has good movement.
You must be needing a good rest after the Maggie rescue then the Snap and Cleo incident.
Sorry to hear about poor Snap. Our last dog Thor who was a border collie/lab cross suffered a spinal haemorrage when he was 6. He spent a week in a vets up north as it happened while we were on holiday. Once we got him home he took a long while to recover but was eventually able to walk about and for a while he also tried to run about over the park beside us. He also wasn't able to scratch himself with his bad leg (rear left leg) so he used to come up to us and put his head to the side so you knew he needed a scratch! The leg was totally useless and was just like a human having a stroke and losing the power in a limb.He was particularly bad in the winter months so had to be kept nice and cosy.Latterly he was only able to go out into our back garden but eventually that was even difficult for him. Our beloved Thor stayed with us like this for another 7 and a half years before we had to let him go earlier this year ,which was the hardest thing I've ever done.(I'm crying now just thinking about it) I know Snap hasn't suffered a haemorrage but I guess what I'm trying to say is that even if the leg is weak and poorly, with lots of love, care and attention from you I'm sure she'll have a lot of happy years ahead.

Snap had her stitches out today. Her jaw bite tear has healed up well.
She is going to the vet on Monday for x rays of her right hip joint and lowere spine. Vet trying to establish why the right leg muscle is losing tone, size etc
She will get her teeth cleaned when she is 'under'
Snap had her second visit to the vet in 2 weeks for a full anaesthetic. This time to for x rays to her right hip joint and lower spine.
She came doddering out of the vets looking very crossed eyed. Saying ‘good stuff you get in there’!!! Her x rays were fine so we have ruled out any arthritis – vets like to catch it early.
It may just be one of those things - you don’t ever notice something till it’s mentioned i.e. smaller leg muscles on right side.
Any way better to be safe than sorry.
So Snap tottered out to the van and off home – While I thought about the £300 she has cost me in 2 weeks. Thinking I’ll try that anaesthetic on myself lol
Good news that Snap doesn't have arthritis, Charles! Did the vet recommend anything you could do to build up the muscle on her leg? I was thinking gentle massage might help to increase the blood flow to her muscle.
