Did you know there are 3 categories of Greyhounds! Those GH's that will not tolerate living with a cat, those that will, and those who will tolerate living with Denzel
I have been fortunate enough to make many friends through GAL, and I am often asked about Denzel,.......is Den a GH, lurcher, whippet???.....I guess from his character he is all of the above!! But Denzel is a CAT, who happens to love GH's. Many of you will know all about my beloved GH Kaz, he was the most laid back GH in the world and not long after I got him, he was 'stalked' by 3 of the local cats! Eh?? ...Strange but true! Anyway, nearly 4 years after getting my lovely Kaz his health deteriorated and sadly on the last night Kaz was with me, I heard a cry at the back door.......a Cat!!....but it was the 18th Dec....so, being an animal lover, I opened the door and in walked Denzel. I let Denzel sit in the kitchen, while I lay on the living room floor cuddling Kaz, and not a word was heard out of the cat all night as he sat, and watched over his friend Kaz. I let Denzel out at 7am the next morning while I attended to Kaz. Sadly Kaz had to be PTS a few hours later, but who was sitting on my doorstep 4 hours later, looking for Kaz, but Denzel. My defences were down and being overcome with emotion I let him in..............then the spooky things started!! Tune in tomorrow, for part two of the story....... What did Denzel do without his beloved Kaz, and what did Den do when a another GH was introduced to the family........???
Part 2..........Denzel, the Greyfriars Bobby of the Cat World!!
The 18th December 2004 was one of the saddest days I have ever had, it was the day I lost my beloved boy Kaz and that day will stay firmly on my mind for years to come. On the 18th and everyday since, I would come from work and Denzel would be waiting for me at the door. He would run into the house, go into every room, crying, looking for his friend Kaz. Once he had checked that Kaz wasn't around he went back outside.
On Xmas Eve, 'Kaz' came home for the last time from Elysian Fields. I intended to wait until the spring to place his ashes in the garden, on the spot he loved so much and spent many days lying in the sun, so I placed his ashes on top of my dressing table in the meantime. Later that day Denzel arrived for what had now become his daily search for Kaz, checking from room to room.......... then he went into the bedroom! What I heard next, can only be described as a 'scream' from Denzel, I went in after him, his back was arched, his tail was up and he was staring up at the urn. Next thing he bolted from the bedroom!! Perhaps seeing the urn was the confirmation he didn't want, or did he see something I couldn't.....who knows?
Later....in the early hours of the following morning, I was woken with a constant tapping sound....I lay in the dark for a while trying to work out what it was and eventually I turned the light on. I wasn't prepared for what I saw.....Denzel was ontop of the dressing table tapping on the urn!! (Denzel never went up on any units in the house). Denzel kept up this strange tapping behaviour every night for weeks.
In January this year I bought a life sized Greyhound garden ornament to place over the spot where I was going to place Kaz's ashes. To my surprise everytime I looked out the window Denzel was sitting next to the statue and still does to this day!! I have photos of him sitting beside it, but not on a digital camera..sorry!
One day while I was cutting the grass, I had to move the statue to mow around it, and I heard that horrible 'scream' again. I turned around to see Denzel a few feet away from me, back arched, tail up and he looked like he was about to attack me.!! I put the statue back and he walked off. About 15 minutes later I went back to the statue to brush the grass off it,.....and yes you guessed it.... the 'scream', Denzel looking like he was about to attack me. He wouldn't pipe down until I walked away.
I have now had to place a piece of carpet beside the statue for Denzel to sit on, as he spends many hours by the side of the statue!!
Look out for the next chapter on how Denzel reacted to Mac, bearing in mind that Denzel runs a mile from every dog.!!!
These happenings confirm my feelings regarding our knowledge on animal "behaviour". With all our knowledge combined we have only just begun to scratch the surface of the depth of their perception and communication.
I'm not a cat person but Denzil sound a wonderful boy. Hope he will become as fond of Mac so in time his greiving is lifted a little. The stories sent shivers down my spine!
Part 3...... the final chapter...or just the start!
Denzel and I plodded on for a few months greiving in our own ways and often together, for Kaz. Then one night I was asked if I could collect an injured dog from a trainer and keep overnight until he could be moved to his foster mum. That dog was Sun, who was def not cat safe. I live near to my Dad, so Sun and I slept on the floor at his house and Den stayed here. The following morning I let Denzel out and a short time later my Dad helped my lift Sun out to the garden for the toilet. Denzel saw Sun and came running up to him at 100mph I chased Denzel away before Sun had time to forget he had a broken hock!! It was almost as though Denzel thought his buddie had come back home and was so confused when I chased him away. Denzel runs away from every dog in the area, so it confirmed to me that I would have to be very careful when Greyhounds were around.
In June I got the nod from Dave that he had found me a dog who he thought would be safe with Den.... enter Mac!!
Not only was I delighted to have a GH back in the house, but Denzel was over the moon with his new companion. He picked up exactly where he left off with Kaz, following us on all our walks. This was a bit off putting for Mac initially, but he soon got used to the idea and now when we are out Mac stops to wait for Denzel to catch up and he waits while Denzel does the toilet too!!!
Denzel runs at Mac at 100mph and jumps out from behind cars to play.....Mac gets very excited playing this game!
What happened to the other cats who followed Kaz....? well they thought they would follow Mac around, but Mac wasn't having any of it, he barks and growls at them until they go away, and pity help them if they go anywhere near his Denzel. Den runs and hides under Mac until the 'nasty' cats go away.....Den looks so smug when this happens! Even the local dogs off the lead don't attempt to chase Den if Mac's there.
I have to watch them in the garden though, cos you can almost hear Denzel saying, 'come on Mac chase me', and I don't think that would work somehow. They seem to have formed a great bond and I often catch them giving each other a little kiss
But despite having a new friend in his life, Denzel, the 'Greyhfriars Bobby of the cat world' still returns everyday to sit at the statue in the garden.
I hope you have enjoyed hearing about my Greyhound loving cat Denzel. xx
That was a lovely true story! Den is a very special cat and it's great him and Mac are the best of friends. And you're right, it's not the final chapter - instead it's the sequel. So I'm looking forward to reading more of Den's and Mac's adventures!
What a special moggy Denzel is.I'm so glad you've both found a new companion in Mac,but it's also nice and comforting that you can remember Kaz together.
Look forward to hearing more about these incredible friends!

Thank you for all the wonderful comments about Denzel and the good news is, although I still don't have a digital camera, I have got a couple of photos, which Dave is kindly going to post for me. Hope you enjoy 'seeing' the amazing sight that I look out my window and see everyday. xxxxx
