Humping !
Permalink Closed

Hi

Could someone please confirm or otherwise Mavericks behaviour.

Since getting neutered last week Maverick has started to hump Max my male Labrador. I mean its just not mounting him its full blown pumping humping!

I'm assuming this is dominance behaviour.... am I correct or not ?

If not then could someone tell me why Mav keeps humping my male lab.

Ta
Katz

Hi Katrina, yeah, just a dominance thing, it takes 3 months for the effects of a neutering op to take full effect so Mav will still have a bit of 'drive' left till then.

That said a few of our boys (all neutered long ago) like to have a wee go, Archie likes Suzies leg and Rebel likes Archie, often a threesome ensues...

Certainly I wouldn't worry about the behaviour but I'd try to stop or limit it, if Mav goes to a new home with another dog it might not be as 'accomodating' as Max..

poor wee Max!! Murf sends his concerns as he is victim to unwanted advances from other male dogs from time to time - he gets v upset at it...

You could try getting a water pistol & keeping it at hand to skoosh Mav in the face each time you catch him in the act - closest thing to a cold shower!!

Oh I have a HUGE water gun..... (pump (no pun intended) action used for misting plants but has a range of about 10 feet)

I've already water gunned him with no effect on the face or chest but have found a cold blast of water at his bum has the desired effect.

Guess will just have to keep water shooting him for now.

Cheers
Everyone

Our older dog, a lurcher, often gets unwanted attention from other dogs.  There's one who lives locally who is madly in love with him (he ignores our bitch completely, and focuses totally on the dog).  Unfortunately, this dog is allowed to roam and if we're unlucky enough to meet up with him, he follows us for miles and never lets up even when our dog lunges and snarls at him out of exasperation.

We mentioned it to the vet and she thought there was a connection between our dog's anal glands (he has a lot of probs with them, they need emptying by the vet every time he goes) and some scent he was giving off.  The glands were emptied by the vet again today, so we'll see if that puts his "boyfriend" off.

Our boy's firing blanks too.  Haven't met any other males for the past couple of days, I'll let you know what happens when we do.

We met up with "the wanderer" again the other day, for the first time since the vet dealt with our dog's anal gland problem.  What a relief, he had a sniff at both our dogs, tagged along for a minute or two, then lost interest.  So it must have been the glands to blame all along, and not our boy's devastating handsomeness.

when we had pip (a border collie) and meg (a spaniel cross) they were both neutered.  however, meg would ALWAYS hump my leg - but ONLY if i was at the sink washing up and if i were wearing jeans.  never any other time.  she was odd !!!

it's a strange thing, this humping !
