We were told about three weeks ago that Whistler had arthritis and since then he has been trying different tablets to help with the swelling and pain in his joints.
Poor old soul seems to have it pretty bad and he has been very stiff when he gets up. We went back to the vet's tonight for a checkup and we were told that both his right shoulder and wrist aren't so good.
Mr Vet says that it's now time for the auld yin (who's only seven) to officially hang up his running shoes. He's allowed to walk as far as Luca and Eilidh but he's definitely not allowed to run about with the other them, chase bunnies and squirrels or jump. This is to prevent any further stress on the joints and slow down their deterioration.
We've been told to try as many supplements as we can as these won't interfere with his medication and I've got a friend who's a Reiki healer who I'm going to ask to do some work with him.
The funny thing is that when we got back from the vet's, Whistler looked really sad. It's almost as if he heard every word that was said and understood them completely. However, the good news is that is we stick to the new regime of exercise and meds then his arthritis is completely manageable and he should be fine. You can't help feeling sorry for him though.
Have you tried "Cortaflex", Carol? It certainly helps my old collies who usually suffer from joint problems later in life due to the work they do. It's quite amazing how they improve after 6 - 12 weeks on this stuff.
Oh what a shame! Poor Whistler - he enjoys his running so much too! I'll be interested to hear how he gets on with the Cortaflex. I'd be inclined to give him a regular dose of oily fish too - it's good for joints, and he'd love eating the mackerel, sardines and pilchards!
poor whistler - at least you know he has a good home with you. given that, he won't mind not running so much - he might even be grateful for the rest !!!
Thanks for your words of advice guys. Whistler gets Arden Grange, oily fish, cod liver oil tablets as well as supplements with extra glucosamine in them too already!
We have a magnetic collar for Andie and would recommend it. After a month on prescribed drugs he showed little improvement....at desperation point we reluctantly gave the magnetic collar a try and in four days we noticed a big difference. The company we used offered a three month trial with a full refund if we were less than delighted.....in fact the lassie phoned us to ask how we were getting on, and to remind us that we had two weeks left to send it back if need be.....pretty good after sales service. We use it along with metacam and glucosamine. It may not work for whistler, but its well worth a try. Thinking of you evelyn
A friend of mine has a black lab girl with very bad arthritis - she was a rescue also and had been bred too young etc. She is on Metacam permanently and does very well on it.
Both Harry and Pearly have a degree of early arthritis. Pearly's was caught in time so she's responded really well to glucosamine supplements (Synoquin) and she very, very rarely limps nowadays. Harry isn't so lucky. He had an injury that wasn't allowed to heal (don't get me started on his barsteward previous owners.... ) and so now his right wrist is noticeably larger than the left. We've had him on supplements (Seraquin) but it's too late on in the day for it to make much of a difference. He's allowed to have short, sharp runs but no more than that, and walks of no longer than 60-90 minutes.
I've heard that green-lipped mussel is very effective too.
Poor Whistler - he can come and join our merry band of crocks any day!
Can I just echo the magnetic collar thing. I normally don't believe in these things as a matter of principle however, there's an old Grey in our village (no, Blue isn't the only one) who for the past year has been looking his age very badly, really stiff, couldn't even be bothered flexing his muscles at Blue at one point. Last time we met, he was back to his old strutting self, and giving all the younger dogs loads of trouble.
I mentioned how well he was looking, and his owner said he'd had a magnetic collar on for a couple of weeks and the difference was staggering. The fact that I noticed the difference, without being told of anything makes me believe that in this case it certainly worked.
Good to hear that another grey has benefitted from the magnetic collar. I feel that it has taken three years off Andie. He was in an awful state and really getting no better with conventional medicine.
I was really sceptical at first but was won over when I saw how dramatically he improved in just 4 days. Don't know how it works but you can't knock it when you see an old boy being able to enjoy his walks again.
