I collected Skipper from kennels on Thursday morning. He currently appears on the homeless dogs page as Bill (the one at the bottom).
He was handed to a vet the previous week to be pts - fortunately for him the vet contacted GAL and he was taken to kennels. Dave told me about him and when I looked him up he turned out to be Sim's half brother. Now I know that's not that unusual - specially since his father has sired over four and a half thousand offspring - but it did draw me to him.
He is a sweet boy, and we are working on overcoming one or two hurdles. He is learning his manners with my old cats: it is a lot to ask of a boy who was still racing last week, but I am hopeful. He is quite small and a very nice colour - described on his pedigree as blue-fawn - he is dark fawn with a definite blueish hint across the surface, and light brown eyes.
I have had several: "what am I doing . . . I must be mad" moments - like at 1.40am the first night when he was still whining and whistling and I was lying in bed with the pillow over my head. But last night (only his second night) he was quiet all night - thank goodness - and I thought that was amazing progress in only one night.
It is too early really to say much more. I am working on teaching him his name and he is quite responsive. He is more relaxed than he was initially, but is still quite tense and edgy and very anxious around men!!!!!!!
He blotted his copy book today by pinching a newly baked loaf. My fault - I have got used to Sim and Suzie being so good that I wasn't careful enough about where it was.
Skipper sounds lovely - and I know that before long with you, Sim and Suzie, he'll have settled down. I'm looking forward to meeting him at one of the events. Meeting all the dog-friendly guys in GAL will be good for him too!
Lesley, do you bake your own bread? OMG - I've tried it twice - both of them complete disasters - and the subject of much amusement and slagging from Billy and Martin. I think even Skipper would have had a hard job, I mean A VERY HARD JOB, stealing my loaf without taking a trip to the doggy dentist!
I hope everything goes well with Skipper and I'm looking forward to hearing more about him.
Well done on fostering Skipper. He sounds a nice wee soul. He must be feeling a tad more comfortable if he snatched your lonesome loaf.
Sorry to hear about his anxiousness around men and very much hope he will get over that hurdle.
I can sympathise with Skipper as wee Coco does not really like men and especially drunk & friendly men, who wish to stroke her. Fiddie was certainly apprehensive of people hanging around transit-type vans, but I think after 16 weeks he has got over this phase.
We all wish you Skipper and you and your family the very best. We look forward to seeing you with Suzie, Sim and his half-brother, Skipper.
Well done Lesley. He sounds lovely. I'm sure he will settle down in no time.
I sympathise with the freshly baked bread. Blue did exactly the same when we first got him and other triumps of his include a tray of mince pies fresh out of the oven, my husbands birthday cake and a frozen trout that was left in the sink to defrost (hard not to laugh tho when I caught him running around the garden with it in his mouth trying to eat it like an ice lolly). You would think I would learn wouldn't you
The OMG what have I done is a common feeling Lesley but I promise it will pass as you see this wee boy blossom into a wonderful affection sole. The first week is the hardest. In the mean time I found the odd glass of red wine helped me get through those initial days!!
Look forwards to hearing more about him, you've done a wonderful thing and Skipper and his future parents will be eternally grateful
Christine - yes, I can bake bread, but I few years ago we got a bread maker and Jerry - who is a total bread fiend - discovered the double delight of a gadget which produced bread! So he took over the bread production - we are now on our second bread maker, having worn out the first one - and I can no longer remember how it works!
Regarding anxiousness around men - it seems very common in greys. Sim was also very nervous of men and still is a bit. Iluska - we have also had the experience of friendly drunks who seem to be drawn to greyhounds. There are some who hang around near my work and they call to me now when I take the dogs along that path at 4.30. I always hope I can just slip past, but usually get a cheery wave or: "hello hen . . . . beu-iful dugs"!
A new loaf has just been produced and is cooling on the counter - at the back, with the bread maker in front of it as a guard. I must say the smell of newly baked bread would tempt anyone, and at least Jerry had had his bacon butties from it before it got nicked (he didn't get to eat it, but it had to be binned).
Skipper is not a big eater - he has just left a third of his breakfast - so it seems odd that he would thieve things, but I guess they just smell more interesting. Last night he also tried to get a bowl of left-over potato salad but I'm glad to say he didn't manage as I plan to have that for my tea tonight.
Last night we had a few squeaks around midnight, but nothing more than that. This morning I had set my clock for 7.30, but we both fell asleep again and got up hastily at 8.15 - Skipper was bursting but had lasted all night! A big WELL DONE to him, as that was a long wait for a boy who is not used to waiting!
Skipper's getting on really well considering he's been with you such a short time. I'm amazed sometimes how quickly fostered greyhounds and lurchers adapt to living at home. Skipper being clean all night is a big plus. What a clever boy!
We too get the usual drunk and friendly crew when we walk Vegas at night. Vegas doesn't mind all the attention he gets from them. A few have even offered to buy him!! As if we would for ANY amount of money!
Hope Skipper manages to keep his paws off your dinner. I imagine your kitchen will be like an obstacle course soon, until he gets the picture! Keep up the good work, Lesley, you're doing a great job with Skipper!
Oh dear! When am I going to get myself tuned in to the new boy?
When Sim arrived (1st Dec 04) - he was our first dog together, and I stringently monitored him and anything I had left out anywhere. Somehow I am having trouble moving back into that level of care with Skipper - like I said before: lulled into a false sense of security by Sim and Suzie's good behaviour.
Today Skipper got half a walnut loaf (from a visiting French Market) which I had stupidly left near the edge of the counter after lunch, and then later - discovered in his 'cage' (indoor kennel) a large bag of twiglets also knicked from the counter where Jerry had put them ready to take back down south with his sandwiches. Fortunately the (bacon) sandwiches were untouched.
A large bag of Twiglets was too much even for Skipper (and Sim who I am sure had helped him consume them) so it wasn't finished. Strange thing for a dog to eat don't you think? I'll bet he will be thirsty later!!!
bless he sounds quite a charcter Lesley, well done for fostering him, i'm sure he will come on in leaps and bounds with you. Looking foreward to hearing all about his progress.
Hi Lesley, Glad to hear you've taken Skipper on Board!! I just love the name - did you give him that name yourself?
He sounds like he won't miss any opportunity for food of any kind - Yes, think its time for extra pair of eyes, or remembering to put everything out of reach. Must admit it can't be easy remembering when you're not used to it!
Pity you can't be at the Awareness Day next Saturday, but I take it Skipper will be there with Suzie & Sim (in the kennels).
I will make sure my dog biccies are stored safely!
Yes Lita - Skipper will be there along with Sim and Suzie. I will be at my older brother's wedding in Shropshire (I'd rather be at the Awareness Day . . . .oops - did I say that out loud?)!!
I have made Dave promise me not to give Skipper away to anyone (at least for the time being)!
Our JJ was a terrible thief when he first came to us, it turned out that the food/foods that he was getting didn't agree with him so he was leaving the dog food and pinching anything he could. Once we got him on a dog food which agreed with him he improved dramatically and nowadays he only pinches if I've kept him waiting too long (or if the kids leave things right under his nose)! JJ is on Burns Holistic now courtesy of a positive endorsement from Glenda somewhere on the forum. Enjoy the wedding!
Hmmm - do you think that stealing my lunch means he feels at home? Therefore I should be pleased?
Breaking this habit it going to be tough - even if there is nothing on the kitchen counters for him to steal - as soon as I go out of the room he is up there and when I come back the fresh ironing is all over the floor!
Not to worry - I guess he'll get bored with it if he continues to find nothing! Must be careful!
when I come back the fresh ironing is all over the floor! :cry
Oh Lesley, I know the feeling, I took advantage of the nice weather today and hung out a washing to save the place looking like the chinese laundry.........then I let Presley and Aaron out!! All my clean DRY washing pulling all over the garden, in the mud and ofcourse just before I had done my daily poo scoop!!
No matter how well we think we have hidden things they always seem to manage to find them. Came home today to find my 2 year old daughter's sticking and gluing masterpiece in shreds on the rug as it had dried pasta stuck on it and Blue decided it would make a nice snack.
Skipper sounds a right character I would have loved to have seen him trying to open the risotto it must have driven him mad with frustration
A decision has been reached with regard to Skipper's future!
We have tried very hard with him since we fostered him in August. He is great with Sim and Suzie and great in the car - the only question has always been his intentions towards our old cats.
He has improved - but we still don't trust him with the cats. However - we realised at the weekend that we couldn't imagine letting him go to live with someone else!! The bottom line is that we are coping with his behaviour and will continue to do so. Hopefully he will continue to improve.
