It seems to have been raining here nonstop for the past three days. Our older dog can still be walked (well, when the "stair-rods" slacken off to a drizzle, anyway) but Madame Belle won't have a bar of it. She absolutely hates getting her fur wet.
Last night, when it was time for their last "outing" of the day, the rain was pouring down. The older dog went out, quickly did his business, then came back in again. Belle hovered around the back door until I physically pushed her outside, where she stood looking sorry for herself and gazing longingly towards the kitchen. I gave her the command, and she "assumed the position" for about three seconds (just to show me she understood), but didn't actually do anything. She just couldn't wait to come back indoors. I stayed up later than usual, hoping the rain would let up a bit, but it didn't and I had no more luck sending her outside.
Result - a gallon of "piddle" on the kitchen floor this morning.
Any suggestions as to how to make her "go"? You can take the dog into the back yard, but you can't force her to do anything whilst she's there... <sigh>
have you got an outdoor coat that you can stick on Belle when it's raining?
Eilidh hates the rain too and would rather stay in when it's wet than go out, but she will quite happily trot round the park and do her business with her coat on. When she's finished though, it's a quick march across the road home to get back to bed.
Hi Carol, yes Belle has a coat but I think it's her face she hates getting wet. I tried her with her new pyjamas, with the roll neck pulled up, but even then she has a few inches of snout sticking out.
She's no more bother to bathe than the older dog, so I think a combination of the warm water and a dry face until the last moment is something she'll tolerate. Cold wet rain just isn't.
Short of one of those contraptions that strap onto the head and hold a wee umbrella above her face, I'm stuck.
Murfs the same - whines to get out for the loo - coat on, persuaded to go out into the garden with a gentle shove, stands there looking at you....you eventually give in & let him back in, only to be whined at 10 mins later & the whole game begins again.....
grrrr!

This terrible Glasgow rain is driving me up the wall but my dog loves going for walkies in it. Its alright for her we're just the ones left to clean up the mucky pup afterwards!
dave doesn't mind the rain too much but won't hang around too long. daisy, tho, hates the rain but, so far, her need for a wee has out-weighed her hatred of getting wet !
good luck in finding a solution but i can clearly see you holding an umbrella over her in the garden !!
We're obviously mean to our dogs! No matter the rain, they're out the door into the garden for a final widdle before bedtime. They know that the quicker they get done the quicker they'll be back inside in their fleecey beds. I know greyhounds are built for speed, but you aint seen fast till you've seen our two peeing in the rain!
I would - put on my jacket, put her on the lead - and then out into the garden until she does what she needs to do!
When she has her pee - lots of praise in exicted voice and then quickly back indoors. I'm sure she will soon get the idea that the sooner she pees the sooner she will get back inside.
My old girl Suzie is like that - hates the rain, but she does know that she has to go and won't get back inside until she has done her stuff! So - she dashes down the garden - has a pee and then dashes back to wait by the back door until everyone is ready to come back in!
Blue has never mastered the pee on command thing whether rain or shine. We spent ages trying to train him when we first got him, spent ages in the garden and he would just stand and look at you as if you werent quite right in the head!! When he was out and about we did give him the pee command every time he went so he knew what we wanted him to do when we said "busy" and praised him but again got the "your really not quite all there" look!
After a day of training Spart (foster dog) was peeing on command. Blue still didn't learn.
We have now given up as he has his last wasl at 8pm and goes until 8am with no accidents and doesn't really seem desperate then. Must have a bladder of steel.
Rain doesn't bother him as long as he has his coat on and someone to dry his face when he comes in...
New boy Chad won't even lower himself if it is spitting, one look out the door and he's making a quick u turn. He seems to be able to wait forever.
Tig on the other hand is disgusting- he goes right near the back door and walkes through it and then expects to get straight back in! When we first got him we used to have to shut the back door after him or he was straight in and a morning puddle on the floor followed. He soon learned to go but as I said right at the door (on a couple of occasions cocking his leg up the back door) they are funny though you have to laugh.
