Hi, first time post!

Hi everyone......

This is the first time I have used this forum so I think I had better introduce myself and my family.

I live in Newcastle upon Tyne with my family.... Gary (the hubby) and five kids, ages ranging from 15 to 1 year old!

We decided to start looking into getting a dog a couple of months ago. We didnt't really have a breed in mind to begin with but the more we looked around the more we saw how lovely Greyhounds are. We looked a lot on the internet to find out as much as we could before we went ahead. We wanted to make sure we were choosing the right breed, not only for us as a family, but also for the dog...

We went to a local dog and cat shelter as there are sadly a lot of Greyhounds in there.  I went with my 12 year old daughter and the baby. We saw a lovely male lurcher who had the most beautiful face! He seemed so fed up being in there (don't really blame him... it was freezing inside the kennels). When we enquired about him we were told he couldn't be rehomed with children as he was so nervous. We went home and agreed to come back the following day to look some more.

The next day was freezing again! It was also pouring with rain but we were not detered!! We had this fabulous feeling that we would find our special someone that day! After walking into the first building we saw a gorgeous brindle Greyhound girl..... My daughter had stayed outside the building  with the baby as the noise in there was really bad! One starts barking,  then they all join in and you can't hear yourself think!  I crouched down next to her cage and called her over. She lifted up her head and looked at me ..... then turned away and refused to look at me again! I looked on her card on the door and it said that she had been there for 5 months and had mange when she came in. I asked the man looking after her block why no-one had rehomed her and he just said..' no one wants her'..... Probably the word 'mange' had a lot to do with putting people off.

I took her for a walk and thats when she actually smiled at me... now I am not a romantic at all but I am telling you she smiled! We walked for ages in the rain..( I was worried she would get cold but as soon as we went near the kennel block she just walked past it!)  She was so relieved to be out of the noise. I honestly felt that I couldn't leave her there. She deserves a home.

She has been with us for two days now... I know its early days but it feels like she has always been here! She stands by the door when she needs the loo, she doesn't snatch food when you offer it to her and she and the kids get on really well. I really feel we have made a great friend.

Oh by the way.... her name is Saffron and right now she is flaked out with her head under my bed! Gorgeous!

Shelley x

Hi Mel and Dave, thanks for the welcome!

I am trying to get a photo on here of Saff but not getting very far! Will try again.

Just caught her in the bin... Gary went to the shop and she assumed she was in on her own.... straight in the back room and got a yoghurt pot out! So naughty. She just looked at me as if to say ' am I bothered?'

I looked at the chat thingy Vee but I can't work it out! Dim geordie alert!!

She's lovely no wonder you fell for her.

Newcastle isn't that far away from Scotland. We lived there for 3 years (Kingston Park).

Plus Scotland is a fantastic place for a holiday...perhaps around GALa time or one of the monthly walks

Wow its a small world! I am only five mins away from Kingston Park! We are planning to visit the Edinburgh area next year for our family holiday. Just trying to sort out a place that takes dogs now! We were supposed to be going in a cottage but I don't think they accept dogs. Will see what events are planned for that time x

Hi Shelley, welcome to the madhouse !  Saffron looks gorgeous, glad you found a greyhound, they are the most wonderful breed.  We have two and wouldn't choose any other breed now.

I'm from way down south in East Sussex so never get to meet these great people.  Keep trying to get to the chatroom - it takes a bit of doing the first time - but its worth it.... this lot are good fun.  Dave will help if you have trouble getting in.

Hi, Shelley

Well, that's just what I like - starting Monday morning in the office with a snivel at a happy tale of another greyhound finding her forever home. Saffron is beautiful - no wonder you fell for her.
