Bid for freedom
Permalink Closed

I need help! Saffron made her first bid for freedom today. We were just about to put her in the car and she reversed out of her collar and nicked off! We have only had her a week so we don't let her off lead at all and I nearly died when she escaped. I must have looked a complete plonker standing there putting on a silly voice saying ... ' come on saffy.... oooh who is a lovely girl....want a treat? come on chicken.... precious lovely saffron...' etc etc etc ( I am sure you get the point - I looked hugely ridiculous!)

She considered the offer of a hot dog and luckily for us decided that it was a good plan. I got her back into her collar and lead and all was well.

What I need help with is finding a way to stop her slipping her collar. I can't do it up any tighter as it will suck her will to live!!

(I bet you will all be thinking - 'aw bless the amatuer lol)

Shelly,

Not a nice experience, I know.  Been there with one of mine and I nearly died.  She had slipped her lead after getting a fright when another dog attacked. Wasn't quite so easy to get her back but I did.

Why don't you try a slip collar.  These are available from the GAL shop and they're really good.

Thanks Carol. I will go and look now. It was scary as I know that I couldnt catch her if she ran off. I am slightly (and thats being generous!) overweight and the best I can manage is a fast walk!

Shelly,

Glad to hear you got her back! I have been there so many times (usually because the kids have left a door open or a fence panel has blown down).

I know how frightening it is (my heart rate nearly goes through the roof and I shake afterwards).

You are not to feel silly at all just relieved to have got her back in one piece! Phew!!!

Hi Shelley you poor thing, I guess it's probably happened to us all at one point! Glad she's back safe and sound now. Just to reiterate what Carol said, the Greyhound Slip Collars are excellent, totally escape proof!

I harness Mac and although it was a bit odd at first, I wouldn't be without it now.it also gives you another couple of 'straps' to grab him by if you cannot reach the lead.  I think its great and I personnally would recommend them as it also keeps the sensitive area of the neck free, but mac also wears a collar for protection to his neck only.

We've got a harness made to measure especially for greys and use it for Pearly at night as we've sewn on a tiny doggy LED light which means we can see her in the dark bombing around her fields. It's mental - al you see is a bright blur moving round the field at 30 mph!

A slip collar is less faff to be honest though. Some harnesses you buy from pet shops are really bad for rubbing and that's bad news for greys as they have skin that tears way to easy. It tends to get them under the front legs. Don't worry about the slip collar - greys necks are much stronger than folk think.

What a nightmare for you, Shelly! No wonder you were panicked. Pearly decided to take herself through the kissing-gate out of her special field the other day. Thank gawd for the magical effect of "Wossis?" - soon brought her back!

GAL slip collars really are excellent.

Shelley,

I use harnesses on my 2.  It only takes a few seconds to put them on and they give much better control with the dogs.   You can also get jackets with a top opening for the lead onto a harness.   Contact Esther at the GAL shop.

Regards,

Thanks for that. I appreciate all the advice I've had. I have to now choose between a harness and a slip collar. I can't afford both so will maybe go for the cheaper option .... if it doesn't work then I will have to spend more on getting the other.

I'm definitely all for harnesses.  It gives me extra to hold on to when Toot decides he must protect me and woof at anything, and I've always hated the thought of pulling on their delicate necks by their collar.

We've also got those little red lights on their harnesses and it looks great flashing around in long grass in the dark.

i'm definitely leaning towards the harness view !  do they need to be lined?  i've heard the un-lined ones can be a little harsh on their skin.  I have emailed Esther cos the GAL shop is out of stock.  she tells me their ones are not lined (which is not a problem as long as the doglets are ok with them).  are they adjustable and comfy?

Hi Everyone,

I make sure that my leads are  firmly in place.  Snap my older girl spotted a fox and decided to make a lunge for it. There was a slight noise as the lead parted company with the collar. I'd attached the lead to the dog tag link. Of course the slightest pressure and it gave way.  Anyway the fox got a suprise , Snap had a good run. Mr fox stepped behind a wall - Snap lost sight of him and that was that.

I do recommend the slip collars. They seem much more comfortable as well .I'll be replacing all of the collars  in a phased manner of course  - 4 to go.

Hi Charles

Ive done that, latching the lead onto the tag ring.. that was when I had a smaller dog and she didnt manage to pull it off. I always check saffrons is clipped to the proper place because of that. She hasn't tried to run away when on the lead up till now.... mind you she still hasn't bumped into a cat yet!

Hi Shelly, I guess everyone has their own personal choice in terms of the harness v's collar debate, it really is one of personal choice, some folks feel better using the harness some the collar....My general viewpoint was collar for dogs I know, harness for dogs I don't...that was until I used a slip collor, now it's slip collars for everyone.....Guess my best advice would be to try them both out to see, if it's a money thing then the harness is defo cheper so try that first and if you don't like it give Saffy a nice slip collar for xmas!..

I have harnesses for my two and they are great ,so much more control and safe. I also clip a small line on to their collar and the harness just for a bit extra saftey. Sasha had hers first and it saved her jumping of a bridge ,if she had just a collar on she would have been daggling over it ,the bridge that is. So I decided to get one for Cas, she did not like it at first but got used to it in no time.

I sound like a right cheap skate! I don't mind buying Saffron the things that she needs, I just can't afford to get her things that she might not end up using.....saying that I can always ebay whatever she doesnt use.... I am so clever lol.

well, we bought harnesses for our two on Sunday and they seem to walk so much better on them than on the leads.  also, we met three small furries tonite on our walk and, tho dave and daisy set up a barking duo, i felt more in control of them with the harnesses.

the only thing i don't like is.........the collars we have for them have the leads permanently attached.  this means we have to attach separate leads to the harnesses.  i'm always checking to make sure the leads are still attached. but that's me just being a neurotic mummy !

Hi Shelley I've been there with Sunny, twice she has made a bid for freedom and I was so scared.....not to mention very red in the face, puffing and sweating!!!! when I caught up with her.

Sunny had a harness when we first got her but i didn't like using it as I've always used collars. Her harness is just lying in the cupboard I'd be more than happy to send it to you to try. If it works you can always buy a new lined one later and return it to GAL.  Sunny was a bit rubbed by it when we got her but her coat wasnt in best condition.

PM me if you want to try it.
