Hello!

Found your post about Millie.  A lot of people obviously share the same love for Greyhounds that you do, as have been wishing you and Millie all the best... it's very sweet.

Millie (moo-moo) is a really good looking dog with such a beautiful personality.  She's crazy.

I've seen how happy she makes you and you make her, hope you ( we) have many happy years together.

Keep smiling x x x

Jennifer,

How wonderful that Millie has found such a lovely new home with you. It seems that lots of the foster dogs get taken in permanantly, doesn't it, and who can blame you I wouldn't be able to resist either!!!

Millie looks a bit like my Tiger, I also have another hound called Chad. If Millie is related to Sanna she must be related to Chad too, as Mel found out that Sanna and Chad have the same dad. He is called Chart King. If you go on 'all about your dogs' and follow the thread 'ear tattoos' (top of page 3) you can follow the link and see a picture of Millies Dad just put in Chart king. If you would also like to see my little poppet he was called Dunmara Admiral.

Hugs to Millie Em, Tig and Chad XX

hiya, yeh i found the info on greyhound-data and her dad is Chart King! I met Sana at the xmas show, she is lovely.  MIllie is feelin sorry for herself just now as just back from vets and has a heart monitor strapped to her chest to see what its up to over next 24 hours. Her heart has  mind of its own, very out of rhythm!

Jennifer,

What do you know about her heart condition?Could it be hereditary? What are the symptoms? Obviously as they are related I am interested to keep an eye on young Chad. He is about to go out for a walk as he is being really attention seeking and needs wearing out. It is hard hoovering up hound fur with a greyhound that won't leave you alone!

I hope that Millie is ok, do keep us all informed as it can be frightening on your own. We are all here rooting for Millie and will offer any help and support you need, as I am sure you know by now.

Fingers crossed Em,Tig and the naughty Chad XX

hiya, its nothing hereditary, its just irregular heart beats. No need to panic, Sanna has already been checked and has no problem.

Millie fine in herself, she is such a good girl, has been as good as gold up at vets.

Where do you live? i'd love to see Chad!

there isnt any symptoms, i just took her to my own vets to get spayed and they noticed she had an abnormal heart beat and rate, so they thought they'd investigate it before giving her an aneasthetic for spaying her.

a lot of dogs have irregular rythms - as long as they know about it then thats cool - they can just monitor her heart carefully whenever she needs any sedative/anaesthetic etc as the vets will need to use different drugs from the norm.

I know this doesnt concern Millie - but did you know that 70-80% of Greyhounds have congenital heart murmers! nowt to be worried about if they are low grade murmurs (level 1 = low, level 6 = high) ie a level 1 or 2 (my Murf has a lvl 1) All due to being so damned fit! Your super super fit human athletes often have the same thing.

thanks Suzanne, i know its not a murmer, they have told me that. I dont think the vets actually know yet what the real problem is, thats why they are doing lots of tests.  I'll keep you all posted when and if i get an outcome.  She has this heart monitor harness on just now for 24hrs and they will read that back and see whats to be found.  I think it takes a few days for the vets to read it back. She has had this on before and they found dropped beats, you can also hear them when they listen to her chest. I think Millie has got the vets stumped, they are not sure exactly what it is. Hope they find out soon.

sorry hon - meant o say - giver likkle Millie Moo a big hug from me!

Found some interesting facts whilst surfing..."

The main function of the cardiovascular system is to transport oxygen to the body's tissues. During intense bursts of speed, the work of the heart is greatly increased by the rise in blood pressure. Conditioned sled dogs do not show any significant increase in blood pressure during prolonged running; Greyhounds, Afghans and Whippets racing short distances do. The resting heart rate of a Greyhound is 29 to 50 beats per minute. Intense running can increase its heart rate to a range of 300 to 360 beats per minute.

The Greyhound has a much larger heart than most other dogs. It can contract and refill with blood five times per second during a race, and at rest is able to pump more blood per beat per kilogram than other dogs. The Greyhound's red blood cells are also capable of carrying more oxygen per millilitre of blood. His cardiovascular system certainly complements his body frame as well as his respiratory capacity, which is built for running, but, like all body systems, there is a limit to cardiovascular output and performance. Over time, the Greyhound's high blood-flow requirement leads to dilatation (enlargement) of the heart.

just what i was looking for!!

Jen honey - have a read at this! includes infor on arrythmias (irregular heart rates) too. VERY interesting!!

at the heart of it....

Hope you dont mind me doing this but you set me off on a mission...Im still a believer that a lot of stuff vets do to Greyhounds aint necessary - purely because they dont know the quirks of the breed. Vets cant know everything.....im sure some wont fit into this generalisation, in the same way that some greys wont fit the norm either....just thought id share regardless....

Thanks, ive had a read at that and its really interesting, some of it sounds like Millie, like she has had an ultrasound which was normal, she has had an ECG which indicated the dropped beats which the vet heard initially, she has also blood tests which showed she had elevated tropanines??? I think thats how you spell it, the vet basically said that by that, the hearts not happy?! This is why she has this heart monitor on for 24 hrs to see if its got better or worse than when they did it 2 weeks ago.  She is a very nervous dog and there is a bit in the link you sent me saying that the irregular heart beat often shows up when the dog is nervous, this sounds like it would be true.  The last time she had the heart monitor on, she only had it on for 16 hrs instead of 24 as i was going to college and i didnt wanna leave her with it on incase she chewed the wires so i took it off, but in that 16 hours she had it on, there was 16 VPC's? whatever this is?? So this time its to see if they are better or worse.

Hi Jennifer

Hope the vet finds out that Millie's irregular heart beat is nothing to worry about! I've heard that lots of dogs (and people too) have irregular heartbeats. But it's best that the vet is keeping an eye on her.

Give her a big hug from me and Vegas and let us know how she's getting on.

Christine

Jennifer,

Sorry to take so long to reply. I just wanted to let you know that we are all thinking of Millie here, after all she is family to our Chad.

I would love to see Millie too, but unfortunately live all the way down here in Peterborough (near Cambridge) and not up there in Scotland.

Will post some up to date pics when I can bribe a member of my family to help me (I am really useless at using this computer!)

Best of luck to you and Millie Hugs (and licks) Em, Tig and Chad XXX

Got Millie booked in for next tuesday 28th (Feb) for her last heart scan!

Hopefully everything is good, hopefully her heart problem has either gone away or got better, then at last i can get her spayed! Cant face her coming into season again, its such a nightmare!

You all have to keep your fingers and paws crossed for her
