This probably seems like a terribly random topic, but I once heard a rep from Battersea Dog's Home say that black dogs were much harder to home than "blonde" dogs - i.e. people generally prefer golden labs to black labs. It was thought that this is because darker dogs look more vicious. (?!)
Now obviously, I don't fall into that category myself. I grew up with black and white dogs, and I actually prefer darker coloured dogs - so naturally I am ecstatic that my Greyhound is black with little white bits and big amber eyes!
I just wondered though if this is also true of Greyhounds? Has it been more difficult to home darker coloured dogs?
It's very strange, I don't understand it either, but I think we have Andrex to thank for making pale dogs popular, and bad press for making darker coloured dogs like Rottweilers unpopular. I just wondered how far the idea stretched, as I had never given it any thought until I heard it on TV, and then began noticing that it seemed to be true.
I think that you cannot beat the gloss and shine on a healthy black coat, I used to joke that I had been polishing our Charlie all day! It also goes alot better with all my dark carpets, unfortunately Chad my latest addition is blonde but definately not dizzy. Em X
You're right about the gloss and shine of a black coat Emma. I take it that's not your Chad in your user pic? I do love that picture you use, the dog looks cheeky and happy!
Staff at the Dogs Trust in West Calder said the same to me. Puppies seem to go quickly no matter what colour, but in older dogs people prefer light colours to black. I don't get it either. It must be some sort of prejudice or something that folk have picked up somewhere, maybe tv, maybe certain breeds? I have heard it's the same for cats though...
I don't have any preference to colours at all, I think all colours and markings can be beautiful. I would quite like to swap Casper's white hairs for black sometimes when I look at my sofa though....

It's all true, can't home black dugs for love nor money, they are always overlooked, bit sad really cos when their coats come out they look super sleek and super shiny. It's probably the ONLY colour thats mentioned in GAL applications forms in terms of people saying the DON'T want a black one...
CJ, don't think you'd want to swap white hairs for black - we have the best of both worlds as far as hair castng goes - one black dog & one white - some things show up the white hairs & other things show up the black hairs
It's so sad. And slightly ironic... On the "colour preference" of my application, I did hesitate, because I wanted to put "Black or black and white". I don't really care what colour a dog is, but having always known black/black and white dogs growing up, I just get a happy feeling when I see a dark coloured dog.
After I first applied, I remember discussing it with my mum, and we both agreed that we hoped I got a dark coloured dog - dark brown, or preferably black. I was so happy that I found a black dog that suited me. I would have been happy with any colour of dog, but there is something reassuring for me about a black dog - wrong, I know, but Billy's face made me happy because he looks like Chloe, my sister's dog, who I found on my paper-round some 9 years ago (picture below).
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL - so are all the others, but my Noah just my big shiny prince, there is nothing like the fantastic shine you can get off a black coat
I just couldnt choose....I get sooo many comments at how stunning Murphy looks & what a wonderful sheen his coat has - folk can never understand when I tell them the black dogs are always overlooked.....
Colour was never ever even a consideration when I started looking for a dog - it never even crossed my mind that folk would favour one over the other...I just wanted a caring gentle soul....
Now I have two!

Ive just adopted a black GH (Mr Spoons) and I love the colour! I saw Billy on the GAL page before and thought he was so beautiful! We have always had black dogs - if you look closer than the coulour then you will always see the beauty of the GH's
When we applied to adopt we wanted a black dog because I knew that they are harder to home, and the colour really didn't matter to us. However - cat safety was paramount and so we adopted Sim who is fawn and white. I was quite disappointed initially not to be able to take a black one, but Sim is our gorgeous boy and I am so glad we adopted him.
I think all the dogs are lovely, I just think it's so sad that black dogs are harder to home. I have noticed that people are generally more afraid of my dog than most, but I think it's mainly because he is the only Greyhound on the main routes I walk on, and most people don't know what sort of dog he is. I have met several people who have quite vicious dogs that they usually allow to run loose, yet they quickly reign them in when they see me coming... Which is probably a good thing...
I still think the Andrex puppy has a lot to answer for, though! Andrex, you need to use a black lab in your next TV ad!!!
