Harry has started growling at Pearly
Permalink Closed

For some reason Harry seems to be growling a wee bit a Pearly. The times that we've heard him seem to be when they are in the lounge and the two of them are lying on their separate bedding, or, if Harry is on one bed and Pearly comes over to sleep on the other. (For some reason now she won't settle unless she is on the bed nearest the wall - must be her favourite.)

He is prone to standing over her on the odd occassion and asserts his dominance - especially over toys, even though they don't get these very often. He always wants whichever toy she has too! Last night she virtually froze in fear with her head down and ears back and wouldn't move when he started growling. Poor lass. All she was dowing was moving in here bed and he was sleeping - must have been 3 feet away from each other too. She just tried to cower in the corner to be as far away from him as possible.

It is puzzling though as she will sleep in his proper bed in the kitchen and he won't move her, yet he wil never try to go in her bed. He never tries to take her food either, even if she has stolen it from him.

We've no idea if this goes on when we are not around.

Anything to worry about here or is this big lad bossing wee lass?

Hi

I can't offer any advice about what is happening between Harry and Pearly but I just wanted to say that I hope it gets sorted soon for you all. I know its a bit scary when things go a bit wrong! I am sure someone will come along with some advice for you.

I also have a boy and a girl but with us its the other way around - Saffron growls at Deano when he is being cheeky, usually when he lies on her bed, but he asks for it. It sounds like Pearly isn't asking for what is happening. Poor little thing.

Hi Shelley - we've had Harry for approx 9/10 months now and he's never really given her the nasty growls in the house before so we were a bit puzzled as to why now. We're okay with growls now and again as that's they way they communicate, and Harry growls at most dogs when he's out on walkies, but he seems to be a bit more bad tempered with her at the moment. Maybe never got enough Xmas pressies???

Hi Steve and Fiona, Just wondering if there is a bitch in season that lives near you and maybe that is the reason he is being a bit touchy either that or he is just being a bully. Nora.

Oscar occasionally growls at my Petra, but only in specific situations, which is this: he is on the bed with me and Petra tries to join us and he really snarls at her in the most horrible manner! Or, if she tries to get on the couch but has to step near him to do so, then she gets a growl. He only started this after about maybe a year or so as well.

TBH, I've never had any worries about it, as he is just a grumpy old git! He doesn't like 'his' space being invaded I guess, but like yours they never fight over toys or food or anything like that, I trust them 100% together, so I just don't worry about it and ignore it when it happens. Of course I've never met your dogs, but it seems to me that if there were a real problem between them it would likely have surfaced before now.

Hi Steve, I've been mulling your post over for the last few days, it's hard to say whats going on, you seem to imply that most of the growling happens when Harry is asleep or lying in bed and Pearly is up and around? Apologies if I've got that wrong, I guess we do all know that the 'let sleeping dogs lie' saying is particulary good advice round the hounds, perhaps he's just getting a fright and woken up? I've seen a few of mine like that and it's really odd to see it happen as there's usually quite a long time (i.e. 5 - 10 seconds) when they REALLY don't know whats going on when they've been woken up with a start. Perhaps this is the case here?..More info please!...

Thanks all - we're not really worried at it as we know Harry is rough at times and frightens Pearly but she gives him aggro back at times.(No bitches in heat near by either Nora)

Dave - the times that I've heard him growl aggresively is when they've both been on their beds at the back of the lounge. The time I heard him give a persistent growl is when he was dozing and Pearly started to do her circles on the bed. He's probably telling her to stay still and stop fussing I reckon.

Fiona said the other time was they were both on their beds - but Harry was on the one that Pearly usually goes on- and when she walked over to where the beds are he growled - he wasn't asleep then.

It's a funny relationship they have in the house - he will never go in her proper bed in the kitchen but she will use both and he ends up sleepiing on the lino and he never moves her. If we ever feed them tit bits from the same bowl she's mental and he never stands a chance and gets barged out of the way.

Outside iis a differnet kettle of fish - he's a brute off lead - unless it is dark and he doesn't chase her. Hence we only let them both off in the dark!

If someone can explain al that I'll be impressed!

Steve,

I don't understand it either but just wanted to let you know that it happens here too. My two are both boys and neither is really that dominant although if pushed Tiger is boss. Chad is far more aggressive and will not let anyone into the house (he is the best guard-grey I have ever had! checking the back gate every time we let him outside.) They share beds and toys and will both nosh each others food. This would not have happened with my other grey Charlie who would have tolerated none of it from Tiger. No one was allowed on his bed and if anyone touched his food I think he would have attacked (no one would have dared) poor wee Tig!

Their proper beds are in the dining room but if Igo into the lounge Chad will always follow. If Tiger then tries to come in later he gets a warning growl and just like Shelley says Itell him to stop being so silly! This appears also to be when Chad is dozing so maybe Dave is absolutely right! So far no one has been injured and therefore, I am not too worried but if Pearly is smaller like Tig you can't help but feel sorry for them. Chad is a bit of a large brute at times even with us.

Hope they sort it out soon Em, Tig and Chad XX
