Okay, Just done HUGE shopping at well known supermarket. January has come and diet has begun Costs a lot of money to buy low fat food etc. Big pile of very healthy shopping at checkout, BUT in amongst all this, several tins of cheap hot dogs. Very strange looks from very nice couple behind me - wanted to let them know that the children are very well fed (eat us of of house and home actually) and it REALLY is to train our very spoiled greyhound!!
personally, i'd give the cheap stuff to the kids and the really decent food to the dogs!!!! after all, kids will eat most things but greyhounds deserve such a good life after kennels!
in case you hadn't noticed, i'm the typical wicked stepmother!!!!
seriously tho, i'd love to have seen the look on the other couple's faces !
ooo - great idea 31 tins of cheap hot dogs (for kids - well they eat school dinners - should enough) 31 tins of sardines (very well fed and shiny dog) 31 bottles of wine (that's me seen to for January).
Hiya, new to this forum so excuse me but must agree dogs deserve the best, i love my kids but kids are just so spoilt where dogs are so loyal and loving they deserve a lovely treat whether it'll be fresh cooked chicken, fish or leg of lamb... always being told by my kids that the dogs eat better but why not is my answer???
Just a point to note for those of you starting a diet this year...
Low fat foods are what they say low in fat but the manufacturers take the fat out so have to replace it with something and you will never guess what that will be..... SUGAR !
You are still better buying full fat foods and moderating your intake. Did you also know that white bread has nearly double the sugar of wholemeal bread. As you can probably tell I learnt a few bits and bobs over Xmas (nothing better do I'm afraid)
Oh in my house..... all four a VERY spoilt ! They had duck at Xmas along with cranberry sauce oh and a few choice hotdogs. Infact I think the dogs are fed better than all of us humans in this house and they still ain't fattening up !!! too many healthy choices I bet
After all the racing they've done through their lives they deserve to be able to sit back, take it easy and yes enjoy all the goodies that they get offered. i get alot of pleasure out of watching my dogs running in the garden, sleeping and of course tucking into a good hearty meal and making the most of the delicious treats, some offered and then there's always the treats that are not always offered as Raj is out little thief amongst mine.
We get strange looks like that too when we're shoppin. Usual conversation is ' Will the weans eat that? Will that be enough for four weekends?', holding sausage rolls/weans chicken nugget things etc. (Ben's gonna need to train his new mum & dad!)
LOL! My shopping trolly usually looks something like this: lots of fruit and veggies for humans (on a health kick ) about 6 packets of fresh beef mince and liver for dogs plus the meat we eat ourselves...people must think I'm a meat addict!
Mine enjoy hotdogs for training (convenient to cut up) or those dried sausages or bits of cheese. It is hard not to spoil them, but I went OTT when I first got Oscar and he got really quite fat at 40KG! Not to mention the farting! Nothing worse than a fat greyhound (except a very skinny one I suppose, but You know what I mean). I fell into that -oh, he's had a hard life thing and basically I overfed him. But this did not do him any good, especially with his arthritis. So have cut down on his food - he still gets goodies, but smaller quantity, and now a more respectable 37 ish kilos.
After all the racing they've done through their lives they deserve to be able to sit back, take it easy and yes enjoy all the goodies that they get offered.
Sorry, but am puzzled by your logic here - you seem to imply (correctly IMO) that they have a hard and restricted life whilst in racing kennels, but if that is what you think then why are you involved in racing greyhounds (as you stated in your introduction?)
Sorry about the confusion; what i mean is during their racing lives they are restricted to what treats they can have and the quantity. in most kennels you are normally only allowed to visit on a sunday so your restricted to what the treats they are allowed.
After all the racing they've done through their lives they deserve to be able to sit back, take it easy and yes enjoy all the goodies that they get offered.
"After all the racing......" Isnt it such a pity that in this day and age 'humans', who are meant to be the more intelligent breed, and who profess to live in a so called animal loving country, that they can only entertain themselves in dog racing! I would love to see an end to this mindless thing they call sport and entertainment and restrict the breeding of this beautiful animal.
DOG food for DOGS and HUMAN food for HUMANS!! Gosh, what an innovative idea!! It's called a "complete" food because it's got EVERYTHING in that a dog would need!!
I'm going to stop now, because otherwise I'm going to either say something I'll regret, or the "powers that be" will be editing me!!

I'm sure we are all guilty of giving our dogs a little human treat now and again. I know I'm very guilty of it.
Rhona told me about hotdogs and Sunny loves them but I only use them when I do her recall training and they are really helping.
How can we not spoil them when they give us those big eyes.
Did any one see "Its me or the dog" on Channel 4 the other night about the 2 black labs who ate better than the family. They had a £17 leg of lamb for one meal and the owners had ready made lasagne. Now thats madness.

That's mad!, but did anyone see the programme last night on BBC2 call 'Pets are People', there was this couple that had 4 tiny dogs (papillon, pug etc) and they took them out for a meal and order 4 rare steaks for them, now thats plain crazy!!
Anyone who signs up to a site like this cares about the welfare of greyhounds. GAL is about education as well as rescue/homing and I do feel that it is difficult to educate if you alienate. Passion for the cause is admirable - to achieve GAL's immediate aims the passion also needs to be attractive, to change the system it probably also needs to be inclusive. Oh, and as far as the food thing goes - dog stuff for the dog, it's the only way to avoid sludgebutt!
GAL is about education and it is a harsh fact that greyhound racing isn't a pretty sport. I agree that not all trainers are unscrupulous, nor are they unkind to their dogs. In fact, I have seen many trainers who are caring towards their dogs. Why though, should we have to glamorise racing in order to attract people to our cause? If we ignore some of the less pleasant going-ons then we are not going to educate people correctly.
The simple fact of the matter and the thing that we must educate people on, is that every year, thousands of greyhounds are bred for this 'sport.' They have a very short shelf-life, after which, they are discarded and it is left to organisations such as GAL to find homes for them. If greyhound racing wasn't allowed then there would be a far lesser demand for these dogs and therefore far less to rehome each year. And let's be honest when we say that the ones who are actually put up for rehoming are just the tip of the iceberg.
I don't want to alienate people from this Forum; quite the opposite. However, people here, from all walks of life, have the right to express their opinions quite clearly. I am a regular visitor to a 'flappers' forum and I find the views and opinions expressed there quite interesting..even the ones about anti-race protesters. There are also debates on there about the conditions that trainers and kennels keep their dogs in and also some debate on race tracks. I'm guessing that even people in racing know about the darker side!
If I don't like anything that is posted there, then I have to remember that the site was developed for people who are involved in racing and who don't always share my views, just as anyone who visits this site must remember what it is GAL does. What we mustn't do, however is attack someone personally as that is a sure way to turn folk away from our cause.
I am myself, anti-racing. I don't agree with it in any way, shape or form and have very strong views on the matter, which I will refrain from posting here as I am sure to alienate a lot of people. I choose not to post my true feelings but I would not condemn those who do because we are ALL entitled to our opinions. Remember that people who volunteer regularly for GAL have seen some things that others would rather not acknowledge....this is why people are so passionate about what they do.

Not sure what you meant by your posting, but just wanted to clarify a couple of points, which of course is purely my own opionion.
You said that "anyone who signs up to a site like this cares about the welfare of greyhounds". Sorry to disillusion you, but this Forum is open to the public and therefore it would be naive to assume that everyone has joined because they care for the welfare of greyhounds.
"GAL is about education as well as rescue/rehoming and I do feel it is difficult to educate if you alienate. Passion for the cause is admirable - to achieve GAL's immediate aims the passion also needs to be attractive, to change the system it probably also needs to be inclusive"
What are GAL's immediate aims? I was under the impression that GAL has long term aims, which the active volunteers work for on a daily basis, over and above the recreational side of enjoying the social side of GAL eg: the Forum.
Passion needs to be attractive? Attractive? Change the System? Inclusion? If I am reading this correctly you would wish GAL to promote the passion the members have in an 'Attractive' way?? Sorry to be a killjoy on this, but with the exception of a small minority, those that are involved in Greyhound racing cannot spell attractive, let alone understand its meaning. What they do understand is Winnings, Abandon, and Abuse.
The active volunteers for GAL have worked tirelessly over the years to 'include' as many involved in racing as possible and have been very successful in doing so. The sad FACT is, that Greyhound racing is a money making seedy business, in which No Dog can ever win and a large proportion of those people involved do not want to be included.
The only way to 'change the system' in my opinion, is a total ban on GH racing.
I am sorry if this upsets some of you small minded people but the fact of the matter is just because people like myself supports greyhound racing it doesn't mean we dont care about the welfare of the dogs whilst running or after. my dogs at home are a very much part of my family who are loved and wanted, my dogs at the kennels are so loved and will be homed with myself when its time, even though they are in kennels my trainer, i know for a fact, cares for them all and they are well looked after. some people who adopt ex racers simply do not understand, these in my book are the ones who need educating. I agree alot more needs to be done concerning how many are bred and when they are finished racing the owners should be liable for them. If it wasn't for greyhound racing the breed in years to come will possibly cease to exist as they are breed as sight hounds and to chase. I can not express how much my greyhounds mean to me personally but if i thought for one minute that they were being ill treated in kennels or they didn't enjoy their racing i would definately stop as their welfare is all that matters. i really do not give a damn about upsetting people as every one is entitled to an opinion and this is mine...
At the start of the thread it was about ' spoilt greyhounds or deprived children.'
Yes so it was....... and from what I have learned from this thread and the subsequent postings, I took your lead and signed up to a Vegetarian Forum. I introduced myself as being a Meat eating, bacon buttie lover, and that I shared all my hotdogs with my greyhounds as the dogs were sitting beside me on the sofa and not outside in their kennels.
