Cushings disease

My Toby (13yr old x lab) was at the vet the other day as ill after a pigs ear.

But while i was there, the vet said i should get him tested for Cushings disease once his tummy has settled.

She said he showed all the symptoms! Saggy fluid filled chest? bloated pot belly abdomen, increased hunger and thirst and paper thin skin on his abdomen.

Anyone had a dog with this before and any ideas on whether its worthwhile getting him tested? Whats the treatment and does it make a lot of difference if you treat it. Im not intirely sure what cushings disease is

Any comments on this would be much appreciated

Jennifer, so sorry to hear about Toby and his possible illness maybe the pigs ear did you a favour by alerting you to his illness. Please keep us posted on how things go and we will all pray that things go ok for Toby.

Thanks Nora, I'll give him a week or so to get over his ordeal with the pigs ear before subjecting him to blood tests etc

I'll keep you posted

My lurcher 'Zeta' who I had for 14 years was diagnosed with Cushings 1 year before she had to be pts. She was given medication and was fine for that year, but then the medication eventually stopped working.

But in the year when we knew she had the disease she was monitored regularly and she was really fine.

I would definitely recommend taking things further with tests because medication can be administered by tablet on a regular basis and that Cushings Disease can be managed.

Let us know how things go with Toby please.
