Right guys, help me out here. Please! This is something I’ve been pondering over for more than a year now.
I’ve got five working collies. During their working years they live outside in kennels but when they reach 9 or 10 years old they come into the house to live out the rest of their lives in the warmth and comfort of our home. They get the run of the house, are extremely well behaved and would not dream of getting up on any furniture. They have their own nice comfy beds on the floor and that’s where they sleep, no question! Not a paw would ever be allowed to creep onto furniture of any sort.
Enter 1st greyhound / lurcher ---- in the house 5 minutes and commandeers the leather recliner ??? Not only that, but I found myself, a few days later, putting a bit of vetbed on said chair so she wouldn’t be cold when she first got up there!!
Old collies still on floor!
Enter 2nd greyhound / lurcher ---- within the first day had bagged, not only the leather recliner, but the couch, our bed and the dining room table as well! And, again, did I not catch myself putting vetbed, with non-slip mat underneath, on top of dining room table ??!! Ehh?
Old collies still on floor!
Enter 3rd greyhound / lurcher ---- Ohh, Goad! Must we do this? Ok. All of the above, minus the dining room table, but only because it involves expending energy jumping up there. Pluuus, the armchairs and in front of the log stove where he has a furry blanket just incase the shagpile rug isn’t quite comfortable enough for him!!
Old collies still on floor!
Why do these big lanky beasties think it is their “God given” right to take over the best seats in the house and why do I, who has never allowed dogs on the furniture, just stand and stare, wide eyed and open mouthed and then run round trying to make them even more comfortable on these forbidden places??
Have I just gone totally bonkers or do these hounds possess secret magic powers that turns yer heid tae mush the minute they walk in the door???
hmm, well, i always thought i was very dog-soppy but since having greyhounds, i think i've totally lost control of that part of my brain that says "dogs are animals".
i've always let our previous dogs on the furniture but with the greys, i positively enourage it just in case they're uncomfortable on the floor !!
i think they give out some sort of as-yet-undiscovered pheromone that completely turns us humans into big lumps of dog-loving jelly !!!!!
LOL I totally agree with everything you say but unfortunately my German Shepherd and Cocker Spaniel think if they can do it then so can we!!! So one Greyhound, Lurcher and the other 2 later there isn't much room left for us humans, but do I move them, no, I squeeze in
No idea why you let them on the furnitiure, but I can tell you how to keep them off if you do change your mind:
(This tip was given to me by Carol when I first got Ruby)
Put something on the sofa's etc so they can't get up. I used cardboard boxes, and after a week Ruby had no notion of lying anywhere other than her own nice comfy bed, so I got rid of the boxes.
Alternitively, let sleepiong greys lie where they want

We let Freddy sleep on one chair when we first got him, but he started pushing his weight around, so we nipped that idea in the bud! We used to use the green Safeway boxes on all the chairs when we went out and that stopped him climbing up on the furniture. Now all 3 dogs get locked in the kitchen when we go out, so that eliminates one problem! They wouldn't dare try and get on the chairs whilst we're in! They know that if they want somewhere comfy to lie, they can get in their own bed!!

Your collies are very well mannered! You'd think if the greyhounds and lurchers are up on the sofas, the collies would be climbing up too and filling in the corners.
It made me laugh, though, to think of all the collies staying on the floor while the 'fly' sighthounds were on all the comfy seats.
Confession time! Our two don't go on the furniture at all. They have to make do with the 8 comfy beds that are scattered throughout the house for them.....
Thanks guys! I knew I could rely on you lot for some informative answers.
So far we've got --- secret magic powers, controlled by an undiscovered pheromone, which induces a mushy brain giving automatic membership to the "totally bonkers club"
Love the picture my two used to look like that until I got their new beds. The don't even want to go on the sofa now - at all! Just as well cos we've taken the oppotunity to order a new one now it is dog free!
What a great picture of greys doing what they do best...taking over your house!!! Ours don't get up on the furniture when I'm in the house...but when I come in from work especially after a late shift do I get a seat? Oh no!! Jim and my girls have them spoiled rotten and it's a case of 'but they wanted a cuddle Mum'!!! It's the same at the weekend if I'm off and we all have a long lie,the first person up is usually my 10 year old and she quite often leaves the dog gate at the bottom of the stairs open...3 big heavy mutts then land on you from a great height it would seem and take over the entire bed so you HAVE to get up!!!
But I wouldn't change a thing!!!

I'm so glad it's not just us who is torn between following dog training advice and common sense not to let our beloved greyhounds/lurchers onto the furniture, and not wanting to disturb them when they look so comfy!!
We have been trying to train Bentley ever since we got him (over two years ago) that he is not allowed on the furniture but every time we forget to put the stair gate across the living room door, he is in there making himself very comfy on the armchair - he has learnt nothing!!
He thought all his Christmases had come at once when, last summer, we put our old bed settee in the garden, while we were waiting for it to be taken away. Cue Bentley lying on the sofa, cushions and all, in the sunshine, quite the thing! If we had taken his food out to him then he really would have thought he was in heaven!
I have come to the conclusion that armchairs and sofas are their natural habitat, which is why they give us that look which makes us feel so guilty when we try to move them off!
