I have heard that greyhounds don't generally get on well with squeaky toys, mainly because the squeaking gets them all wound up and they could end up fighting. I have been getting soft toys from charity shops but if the toys have button-like eyes or noses, Dave bites them off and the toys end up in the bin because the stuffing comes out of the holes !
Thinking that proper pet toys would be more durable, I bought a couple. Trouble is, all the pet toys seem to have squeakers in them. I have been supervising dave and daisy with the toys and they are ok tho i won't leave them alone with them.
My question is, how can you disable the squeaker without unpicking and re-sewing the toy?
What i used to do with toys from the charity shop was cut the nose etc off and sew up the holes before giving them to the dogs. I only takes a few minutes and the sewing doesn't need to be pretty ( just as well- i canny sew for toffee). The dogs don't even know they're missing.
Seriously though.....I was advised v early on never to give any of my guys a squeaky toy esp for the sake of Denzel!
My guys only have rubber toys, bones, Kongs, balls.... (oops except you Presley!). I bought my first GH Kaz, a life sized toy fur fox, (Pre Den days) which he carried about everywhere with him even on walks, much to the horror of people walking past. Over the years I had to stitch it a thousand times.
Alternatively do what I do, go to the local pet shop, squeeze all the toys, until you find one that doesnt squeak.......then when you check the price, just say..."Oh, they already have one of these at home" and walk out!!
my two have a basket full of sqeeky toys & it doesnt 'razz' them up - but then again neither of them are ex-racers....
I have found some great non-squueky toys that dont have sewn in plastic eyes or noses etc in Ikea's kids department....as you can see they love nothing more than playing tug of war with it....

Missy and Zak fight the squeeky toy and toss it around and then usually ignores it then pounces on it again (not together - individually). Missy usually pinches them off whoever is prancing with it. They don't get razzed up at all and don't end up fighting either. Best bet is to try a squeeky toy and see what happens.... you can always take it away. Missy is an exracer and a squeeky toy encouraged her to learn to play as it got her attention and the same with Zak... neither knew how to play with toys until the introduction of the squeeky toys.
You can also disable the squeeker by pushing a scewer thru the middle of it a couple of times. Be careful that you don't scewer your hands or fingers.
damn! rumbled !! - actually they were stocking fillers for xmas - I hate red wine! hand on heart....honest!
bed is from Argos catalogue - my two love it - had to replace the lining that holds the beanbag filler tho as it was so thin it ripped & I had those wee balls all over the lounge - tipped it all into a single duvet cover, sewed velcro across the top (as you need to top up the beads every 8mths or so as they squish down) & put it back into the paw print cover & voila - never been a problem since....
phew....a lot of work for just 25 quid....dogs love it though...

Caspers favorite toy is a squeaky tennis ball. It has taken me months to get him used to the squeek as he was a bit frightened of it to begin with. He would be playing with a toy and when it squeeked he would drop it and run away! He now gets pretty excited when I squeek the tennis ball and is in fact a good distraction when he is off the lead. He certainly doesn't get agressive, just excited as he associates it with play. I would say try it and see what happens, if they start getting too over excited or agressive just stop and take it away. You never know they might grow to love them!
Love the picture of Murphy & Maisie - they always look so happy!

Suzanne, love the photo. Will check Ikea for their toys.
Max loves any kind of toy - squeaky or not squeaky. Fighting over toys is never a problem between Max & Tyler as she only plays for about 2 minutes and Max will play for ages. He does get very excited, but we have always used the 'give' command with him so he lets us take it away with no fuss. He is always closely supervised when playing with toys in case bits come off and we don't leave toys lying around, especially when we're not around.
The problem I usually have with squeaky toys is that oscar 'kills' the squeaker instantly & then it's not much fun any more!
My own 2 love squeakies and it does not cause any fisty-cuffs. When we go out on an off-lead walk I usually just have 1 squeaky toy with me in the shape of a welly boot and they take turns playing with it quite happily, or Petra gets the welly and Oscar gets a tennis ball (he likes chewing balls).
One of the foster dogs I had though did go absolutely nuts over squeaky toys, verrrrrry excited (she was a young thing) and I think I did have to limit access quite a bit, as she drove us all up the wall!
Is it possible to play with them one at a time out in the garden if you're worried about fighting over toys, rather than giving them free access to toys?
We have to limit all sorts of toys because Harry is very possessive about them. Chews and treats, nope, but toys - watch out, Pearly! We never leave them unsupervised with toys. As for squeaky things, Harry just pierces them straight away. He's a chewer, rather than a player, so he gets hard, rubbery things to play with. Pearly gets her squeaky toys when out in the field and she loves it - she goes running round like a crazy thing and really enjoys herself, then she insists on carrying it home. Poundstretcher do a great wee barbell type toy, fairly durable and a bargain at only 80p.
Cas and Sasha have a box of toys squeaky and non-squeaky , they are kept out of sight until it is play time then put away after play, it saves any bickering over who,s got what and always supervised. Nora

well, both squeaks are destroyed - dave squeaked them to death !! trouble is, the tiger tail lost its end too so i had to sew that up tonite. as i had the sewing kit out, i repaired piggy's eye holes too.
thank you all for your advice and i don't leave the squeaky toys with them when i'm not around - even tho the noise has gone, they still recognise them as the ones that made the noise !
