Just read on another forum that the horrendous Barcelona greyhound stadium has finally closed! This is great news for the poor Irish greyhounds that were transported to Barcelona for racing, where they had to endure very poor living conditions and were frequently raced time and again with injuries, given drugs etc. These dogs had no future - a few lucky ones were rescued and rehomed by organisations such as GIN but many ended up in the hands of the hunters or in a dreadful 'sanctuary' where it was reported (with photographic evidence) that large packs of dogs were starved and resorted to eating each other.
There are an estimated 350 greyhounds that need rescuing from Barcelona and although the Spanish rescues will do their best to save them, it is feared that many of the dogs will be sold to the hunters.
Please sign this petition to help stop this happening. The picture is very graphic, be warned
Urgh, just read that there are approx. 600 dogs at the Barcelona kennels, but it is thought that some may be retained by the owners, as two new greyhound tracks might open in Madrid and Seville; a few may be sold to the track in Casablanca and some to 'mobile' tracks, whilst others may be sold to the hunters.
However, Scooby, one of the main rescuers of galgos and greyhounds in Spain, is appealing for international help in rescuing and rehoming as many of these greyhounds as possible. I know that our own greyhound rescues are full to brimming (plus I think these dogs would need 6 montsh quarantine), but thought I'd put the link here just in case. It is also possible to send a donation via this site.
