Hi Folks, only a few of you will know who Ruby Wilson was, about 4 years ago I received a phone call from her, she wanted to help the Greyhounds!
She offered her fundraising assistance to GAL and to be honest we never looked back, along with her good friend Anne they became our 'Edinburgh' Ladies. Off they went and started fundraising in earnest for GAL, they didn't ask for anything in return for their services, just the odd leaflet and an occasional request for a dog to attend their many coffee mornings. As I was living in Edinburgh at the time I usually went along with whatever foster dog was in residence at the time. The coffee mornings were great fun and it was lovely to see the looks on the old ladies faces when they greeted the dogs I took along.
Ruby and Anne's fundraising activities didn't stop there, Ruby in particular was a stalwart at the various Gala's and fetes in and around Edinburgh and every few months GAL's coffers would swell by a few hundred pounds that they had managed to raise.
A couple of years ago Anne moved to London but Ruby continued in her one woman quest to help her beloved dogs.
Over this time I became great friends with Ruby, she was committed to helping GAL and worked tirelessly for us. She never passed up a chance to raise a few extra pounds for GAL and I remember her once stopping and picking up a 2p from the ground - it all helps she told me.
Ruby was a great old character, she never let on to me her age, that was her little secret, she smoked like a chimney, had an opinion on everything and wouldn't stand fools easily. She always put a smile on my face and I so admired her commitment to the Greyhounds.
Ruby never liked technology, computers or phones, she liked the old fashioned paper and pen approach to talking to folks, her last letter to me summed her up to a T, it was written on the morning after the recent BBC documentary had been shown, Ruby hadn't slept all night so angry was she about the program and it's lack of information about GAL and the Greyhound Rescue 'scene' in Scotland. Her letter contained a whole list of complaints which she was going to include in a letter to the BBC. That was Ruby down to the ground, a very forceful attitude and she didn't care who thought that!
Sadly Ruby suffered a stroke on Monday of this week and I was informed this morning that she'd died in her sleep last night. She passed on quickly and without a fuss, just the way she would have liked it.
Ruby will be missed by me personally and by GAL in general, I felt it appropriate to post something on here about her, I think she would have been suitably embarrased but secretly quite pleased.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ruby just before Christmas this year. She was a wonderful lady and I thoroughly enjoyed the few hours I spent with her.
I spoke to her about a month ago and was looking forward to being her "driver" in April at another event. She was one of life's characters and will be missed by all who knew her.
Wherever you are Ruby, hope you are surrounded by lots of pointy noses!!
I am so sorry to hear this. I met Ruby for the first time last month when I took Timmy along to one of her coffee mornings and I was looking forward to getting to know her better. Just a few minutes in her company and you realised what a star she was.
Unfortunately, being way down here in sunny(!!) Yorkshire, I never met Ruby, but what an amazing woman she sounds who spent the last 4 years of her life not only raising money for GAL but no doubt having a lovely time and getting tonnes of satisfaction out of it too for herself! ....... what is more satisfying than helping animals?.....
I admire anyone who devotes their efforts to charity (particular animal charities!) no matter how small. What a wonderful mark she has left on GAL. Albeit for only a few years, her efforts will not be forgotten.
Thankfully Ruby has been swept away before she suffered too much. I am sure she has business elsewhere, and is already organising her coffee mornings and her gala's to raise funds for those Greyhounds elsewhere!
I was extremely honoured to meet Ruby on two occasions when I took Sunny along to help support the Edinburgh coffee mornings. Even now thinking about her makes me smile with fondness. She was an amazing woman who you couldn't help but like and respect. I spoke to her a while ago on the phone about helping at another event and she was such a character, she hated asking for help but she was the type of woman who would be first in line to help you if you needed it. She took great pride in her fundraising for GAL and she will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her and attended her events.

I never had the honour of meeting Ruby, she sounds a truly wonderful person who will be very sadly missed. My thoughts go out to her family and everyone who knew her.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Ruby, but I felt so touched reading about her wonderful character and her commitment to helping GAL. I think it would be lovely to have a GAL kennel brick in her honour.
Thats is a great idea Lita - I was given a £20 donation at her funeral on Tuesday by some of her friends who decided to give the money to GAL rather than buy flowers so I've put that to the kennel fund and used it to buy 4 bricks in her memory.
