my poor Janie, what a terrible night she has had. my parents had her out for a walk in the village and Janie was on the lead, then this Spaniel came over and attacked her, she has a chunk out of her flank, and not once did she retaliate, as anyone who knows Janie knows she would not harm a fly. The owner of the spaniel basically said he didn't know what the fuss was about as his dog had just taken the fluff off and it was nothing serious! He even had a go at my dad for trying to get his dog off of Janie! My poor wee girl is now laying here with a dressing on, had some painkiller and is very stressed by the whole thing. Now she is going to have to come to work with me in morning for injections and so that we can get a much better look at what is going on.
My dad has been round to see the guy who had, had time to reflect and was very apologetic for his dogs behaviour, and as we stay in a small village he will put his dog on the lead the minute he see's us, lets just hope he is quick enough. However at least now the dogs owner knows there is a problem and has agreed to take measures to stop this happening again.
Nicki and a sore and sorry for herself wee Janie.x
Poor Janie as you said she is so gentle it wouldn't have crossed her mind to fight back.
It infuriates me that owners of spanials, labs etc think that they can let their dogs get away with this behaviour. Give her a huge cuddle from us and her number 1 fan Blue.
Amazing isn't it? Everyone thinks of spaniels and labs as lovely soft-mouthed creatures, while some people think greyhounds must be aggressive because they wear muzzles - honestly, they do!!! Yet the only dogs we have ever encountered problems with have been spaniels and labs which are often over-sexed and pushy (and that's often just the owners!). (Please note we've said often, not all!).
Poor Janey, must have been very frightening for her, and your parents Nicki. Anyone who's ever seen a proper dog fight will know it's one of the most frightening things to witness.
Hope Janey recovers soon. Give her a hug from us (and Tilly).
Big hugs to Janie, what a fright for both her and your parents to get. At least you can say that your dog behaved wonderfully and did not start anything, hats off to Janie. Hope she recovers well, and there is no after affects for her. Nora

Aw poor Janie! Really hope she's not too badly injured and that she gets over it very soon. Big hugs from me and Vegas! Let us know how she gets on tomorrow.
So sorry for poor Janie, but I'm sure with all your love and care she will soon recover and mend. Although it makes you very nervous of other dogs, I'm sure. Your Dad done really well to get the owner to admit to a problem, and it may even save another dog from a mauling.
Poor Janie, hope she's not too stiff this morning (when this happened to one of our Labs, when I was growing up, she was so stiff for a few days that she couldn't even lie down without my Dad "Felling" her).
Blue would like me to add his sympathies, and to let her know that if she needs a head resting on her, he's the chap.
Sorry to hear that Janie had a rough day yesterday. You've probably already thought of this but it is worth letting her meet a couple of nice friendly spaniels ASAP so she doesn't only associate that type of dog with the attack.
Sending our best wishes to wee Janie and hope she heals quickly. By the sounds of things that spaniel should be muzzled and on a lead all the time, and not just when he sees Janie coming. If he can attack unprovoked once, he can do it again.
Hi everyone, Thank you all so much for your kind words. Janie had quite a bad night she was very unsettled and in a fair amount of pain cying for most of the night.
Took her to work this morning and let one of the vets look at her, and as I alredy knew it needed sutured, so more trauma for Janie she needed sedated which was a nightmare and then once we got started it was apparent that it was going to be quite tricky to suture, however she has about 20 sutures in and had to spend the day at work with me so I could monitor her. The poor wee soul she couldn't work out how to lie down without hurting herself after her sedation had worn off and she stood for 3 and a half hours, (just like your dads lab Phil) and anyone who knows Janie knows she doesn't do standing still for any length of time, my heart bled for her.
Home now and she has settled down a bit, she is totally exhausted. Had a lovely wee bit of chicken and is now laying sleeping, wee scone. So hoping she has a more comfortable night and praying that she does not burst her sutures as even walking is putting extra strain on the wound just of where it is.
Janie and myself would just like to say thank you again for all the kind words and hugs, Janie sure loves all the cuddles.
Love nicki and a slightly more settled wee Janie.x
It makes me so Mad that so many dog owners spend so much money buying the dog and then cannot afford to buy a LEAD.
Local Councils are missing out on so much revenue........they should hit these irresponsible dog owners in the pocket......
I think all dogs should be walked on the lead unless in designated areas like parks.
I hope Janie is ok......and wont be any the worse the for experience. x
This is a subject so close to my heart after my lovely big boy Kaz was attacked by two fighting Staffies who were off the lead, when big Kaz was on the lead.
Hope Janie has a more comfortable night! I'm sure all the TLC and spoiling she's getting is making her feel much better.
And I do hope the spaniel owner keeps his dog on the lead from now on. Vegas was badly bitten a couple of years ago too. The dog that bit him has since been pts because it attacked a little boy a few months later.
Bluddy heck - 20 stitches?? That poor little poppet. I hope she had a more comfortable night and gets better very soon. And poor you too - it must be awful to hear her cry and see her in such distress. You must both be very kind to each other and have lots of treats for a very long time.
Harry and Pearly send loads of snuffles and licks.
twenty sutures - poor we thing and poor you. Must have been horrrible seeing your dog in such distress. It's so frustrating that your can't do anything to make them better.
Hope that you had a better night and all her sutures are still intact.
Sorry to hear Janie has been suffering after such a frightening and angering incident. I hope she feels better soon, and you too. Just hope it hasn't spoiled her confidence for going walks.
Wee update on Janie, she managed to get through the night with sutures intact, so I am very pleased just hope it continues. She had a slightly better night, but needed someone with her as she freaked when she was being left so stayed with her and she eventually settled and had an okay sleep. She is a bit better today, on a hefty dose of painkiller and antibiotics and as soon as she can work out how to lie down without hurting herself she will be alot happier.
Yes it is heartbreaking when they look at you with big eyes and you can see the pain, they don't understand what is happening and you feel awful as you can't make it go away, its horrible. (Dawn, can realate to what you went through, its awful, words can describe how it feels).
Been out on few wee walks and she has met dogs and she has just been her usual friendly, gentle, wee self bless her. So thankfully on that side of things so far so good, she seems to have come through unscathed, which I am so relieved about.
Hoping for a better night tonight with her.
Janie would like to say thank you for all the hugs, cuddles and kisses she loves them.xxxxx
Really sorry to hear about Janie. I hope she has a better night tonight and that the painkillers are kicking in quickly.
Have you thought about asking the spaniel owner to cover the cost of vet fees? I know it won't help Janie any but it might put the gravity of the situation into context a bit more. My neighbours placid lurcher was recently, savagely, attacked by two rottweilers and she asked them to pay the vet fees, which they did (over £200 I think). Unfortunately this is the only language some people know.
