Cut Paws
Permalink Closed

Don't know if I've just got a clumsy dog or if he is particulary prone to bleeding paws! Over the past 6 months my lurcher, Jack has cut his paws 6 times, the latest yesterday. i have 2 dogs the other runs off here there and everywhere and never cuts her paws. Jack rarely leaves my side and will reguarly return to my white kitchen floor and dot it with blood.

Is he just good at finding sharp objects or is this a common complaint? Up until the last 6 months he has never cut his paw in the 7 years I've had him.

Any views would be greatly appreciated! Scared to take him back to the vets incase they call the SSPCA!!!

Haven't heard of it being a common problem, maybe he's just an accident prone dog.  Suppose you get accident prone people so why not accident prone dogs?!!  Maybe you should invest in a red kitchen floor and then u won't notice when he gets blood all over it!

Hi Fiona,

I have heard of this happening before.

Have you checked to see how dry Jack's pads are, cause it does sounds like it is caused by cracking of the pads. You can get waxes that help prevent the cracking of paws, but also back to an old favorite, Aloe Vera Gel is also good for putting some moisture into the pads too.

Your vet would probably have something like a cream to prevent this too.

Hope this helps

Yip! Red kitchen floor is what I used to have!!

His paws aren't dry at all, actually checked them this morning as this thought occurred to me too! Guess he's just clumsy dog! Poor thing couldn't understand why he wasn't getting out for a walk this morning! Does have a lovely bright pink bandage on though!

Thanks for your responses.

A ha, another good use for the wonderful Aloe Vera! Thanks for the tip Siouxsie.

We seem to regularly have small cuts to the pads, which I'm sure is caused by fragments of broken glass always lying about somewhere (grrrrr!!!!)

Could be just a clumsy dog. Millie has quite often got wee nicks and tears on her legs near the bottom, think she just does it when she is charging about in the long grass. They seem to heal quite quickly.

Thought I'd update you all on my EXTREMELY clumsy dog. After the first cut seemed to have heeled I took Jack out for his first walk in 3 days last night. Yip, you've guessed it cut another paw, this time on glass which was then refused to come back out of his paw. Off to the vets (Jack whining all the way there), had to get the vet to remove the bit of glass. At this point Jack screamed down the vets, pretty sure we emptied the waiting room! Such a good boy though didn't wriggle that much!

So we're back at home with a lovely blue bandage on!
The vet suggested putting boots on him anyone know if there is somewhere you can get them specially for skinny greyhound legs?? I've told Jack the other dogs won't laugh at him......

Fiona (and a poorly Jack!)

Poor wee Jack - sorry to hear that he's had quite a time of it recently. I hope his paws heal up very soon. Pearly sends a kissy!

BTW, a friend of mine has a clumsy dog who is always cutting his paws. If there is a teety bit of glass to be found in a whole field of soft grass, her Monty will find it!
